Interview with Jeff Martin

How did you first get into gaming? How long have you been gaming?

I started playing D&D back in 1978 when I happened upon a rulebook at a neighbor's house. I have been playing D&D pretty regularly since -- as well as enjoying some classic war games like Third Reich and Dawn Patrol. I have dabbled in every trend that has hit the market except CCG's, as I was too long an old fart to play them.

What are some of your all time favorite games?

Of course, there is D&D in all its incarnations as well as Third Reich, Dawn Patrol, Hyborian War(PBM), Car Wars, Battletech and Thief(PC). I have designed several home-brew games, with a slider dice game known as Regent being my favorite.

What game(s) are you currently playing?

I really don't have time to game much what with running Dwarven Forge and working year round on True Dungeon. My current favorite game is "Camping" which involves making tents in my living room with my 2 year old. I do plan on playing Thief 3 when it comes out this spring.

Any favorite gaming moments or stories you want to share?

Wow...so many with all my great friends. I host a tiny invitation-only convention for 20 friends called JefCON that is the highlight of the year. It's great to see all my friends in one place, and then get to game with them.

It would be hard to beat last year's True Dungeon at Gen Con Indy. Some friends and I worked our butts off on the thing, and we had no idea how it would turn out. We could not even play test the thing, and we just took our best guess. The genuinely glowing response we got from Midwest gamers was incredible. I will also remember the Award Ceremony.

How did you become involved in True Dungeon?

You can see the whole story on the website...just look at the earliest posts. It was a strange journey.

What are some examples of work you have done on True Dungeon that people might recognize?

I did the logo and the tag line. Cool!

What is your favorite thing about True Dungeon?

The great support we have gotten for our hard work. We really appreciate the thanks and the understanding (when things go wrong), and it is really great to work on something that people enjoy so much.

What’s your favorite True Dungeon moment or story to this point?

Hmmm...so many...perhaps it was seeing that huge line of people waiting for tickets on Friday morning. It was the first real proof that people liked our event.

Without giving away any secrets, what are you most looking forward to with the new module?

I can't wait to see the new room sets. We are really trying to improve them this year, and I have declared spartan square-ish rooms to be a thing of the past.

What do you do in the real world?

I have recently landed my dream job of running a gaming company. And I got it with my dream company -- Dwarven Forge! I also own a sign shop so send all your sign business to my manager at darryl@quicksigns.org. Hee hee

What are some of your other interests outside of gaming?

My main focus is trying to keep my 2.5 year old out of trouble and my wife happy. I enjoy yard work when it is not too hot, and I have been trying to exercise more. Real exciting stuff!

Any other interesting tidbits you would like to share with us?

Keep an eye out for the Surprise Ball. It should add a lot of tension to players as they creep through the dungeon.
