There is a max image size but our forum isn't set up to kick back an error code, it just reverts to the default image. I tried multiple avatars this morning, all but one worked and it was a 1 MB file.

Open your image in paint and reduce the size to 200 x 200 pixels and try again. You're definitely doing the right steps.
