TOPIC: Race Tokens?

Race Tokens? 19 years 1 month ago #1

Was just wondering if you ever thought of them. Maby add it in token bag as a rare or something. Elf token could raise dex +2 but lower con -2 Dwarf (what ever it is that dwarfs do) and so on.

Just had it in a dream, and thought I would share it. Was at Gencon, and bought a bag what was in inside a gnome token... no one had any idea what it was for, but I was a gnome paladin .

Anywho enough of my oddness time to slip back into my fantasy land ;) .

I think that sounds like a cool method for introducing different races into the game. I'm concerned about making the DM's life harder.

The concept of other races is fun and certainly a staple of most fantasy games, however I tend to agree with Beowulf. The more rules, tweaks and modifications that are added the more difficult to manage. I don't think TD wants to get to the point where editions of rulebooks and dm guides are required to play (admittedly a little overdramatic statement but you get the point ;) )

In my (limited) experience and interpretation, TD is meant to be about the players; testing their wit and coordination. The character types/sheets are there to set a reference and mindset as well as offer some balance since not all men (or women) are created equal.

Again, I love the concept of including more non-human races (the rogue class last year was a halfling, my favorite! :D ) I almost always play them in my PnP and online games. Heck, I have a couple compadres who make outstanding dwarves and would be a riot to go through TD using that mindset. I also think minor tweaks accordingly wouldn't be too cumbersome. BUT, it is a slippery slope once you start down it. I personally would rather forgo the slide to prevent TD from becoming laden with rulebooks and rule interpretation.

I'm sure Jeff, Lee, Lance, Jenn, Dave and all the TD design crew have discussed this to some length. I wouldn't be surprised if we saw some experimenting over the 'Cons as they tweak and improve with each passing year.

Keep up the thinking! :!: (Apologies for getting a bit windy there. )

Actually, I don't think it would make that much difference if it were done carefully. They have similar effects as a very rare magic item.
They might have a token that says things like
Dwarf: +4 hit points, character may not be a wizard, paladin, or ranger
Elf: -4 hit points, +1 AC, +1 to hit with sword
These could be changed on the character sheet by the DM in the entry room with the marker used to measure hit points.

Don't apologize for being long winded Stuart, I am always long winded

Stuart touched on this, but remember that TD is all about you. You are the character, and in most cases it is your abilities and actions that determine the outcome of things, not die rolls. As a result, arbitrary character stats are for the most part meanless since it is your physical actions that matter most. Having a +2 on your dex isn't going to help you very much if you have shaky hands and your trying to disarm the rogues trap. We want to keep the game streamlined, fast, easy to learn and for the most part all about you. So if you want to be a gnome paladin, go right ahead. Don't worry about your stats, just create an image of the character in your head and play accordingly. Have fun!
