I think this random weapon and armor is an unnecessary and added complexity ...

I think as long as everyone gets a weapon and armor they can use it's all good. The threat of drawing crappy weapons from you free pull of weapons/armor will help drive sales of token bags, which is a good thing for the finacial health of True Dungeon. Even if you buy one random bag of tokens and get the worst draw ever, you should be able to sell them at the blacksmiths and get a halfway decent set of armor & weapon.

but I also agree with David that a party should put the wizard and rogue in the back of the line and see what the BUFF players pull

I agree as well. This also subtly enforces the teamwork concept. If I were running True Dungeon I'd instruct the person in charge of distributing the free pulls of weapons and armor to strongly suggest this tactic to groups who don't seem to get it. That way you might be able to adjust their thinking towards "we have to work as a team", which will help them once they enter the dungeon.

I like the idea of two different boxes. A fair amount of people last year just did it cuz' they thought it might be fun. Some were alone, many did it with one or two other friends. I expect that many people will do the same this year. For them, choosing the simple weopon so that they can have one they are sure to be able use for their character, without having to worry about a group of strangers they just met, might be a nice option.

I never saw tons of people at So. Cal trading tokens either. I never even saw that many people huddled outside the room. Most were people who were on deck for the game.

From the looks of the token bags this year I think the problem will be too many weapons. And once I get a weapon that my character can use I don't plan on trading people for weapons any more unless it's something better than I had.

I wouldn't sit on three longswords in the hopes that somebody who doesn't have one will want to trade for one. I'll be cashing them in and trying to getting cooler stuff.

And as for trading tokens within your own group, I just gave the ones I couldn't use to the people in my party who could use them. I figured survival was more important than getting them to cough up a few gold pieces. :D

Keep in mind everyone, that the tavern has been vastly expanded to allow people who are just there to hang out the opportunity to do so. I believe this will greatly increase the number of potential traders! And anyone bold enough to annouce what they're after to the crowd will probably find several people willing to negotiate...

The growth of TD as an event will continue to pull more people in!

Personally, if I were to play a rogue or wizard and had a choice to draw from a simple or anything box, I'd draw from the "anything" and hope I get a better weapon that I could barter with at the blacksmith. That way I might come out ahead. The great sword I drew could be worth a dagger and a short sword... or a short sword and gold.

I completely agree with Balkin. It sounds as if the Inn is being constructed with the intent of creating an atmosphere that encourages greater player interaction. I bet once one or two brave souls begin the bartering process... the floodgates will open and the players will enjoy it. (Look at the amount of online bartering that happened. )

What happens to the poor wizard player when an entire party of brand new adventurers (with no supplemental tokens) pull out longswords and battlaxes? Seems unlikely, but stranger things have happened. Both the wizard and rogue would be out of luck, since neither can use these weapons.

If we're using the term "rouge" rarther than "thief" I think it's safe to say that wizards and rouges will be able to use non-class weapons, but with a penalty. After all, in D&D, wizards and rouges can use longswords, just not very well without the appropriate feat. So there really wouldn't be any need for a second "simple weapons" draw box.
