I am not sure how we will handle it this year, but we did have one or two groups use Knock on one of the sealed portals in 2004. There is technically no reason why it shouldn't have worked, but a more inventive (some might accuse sadistic) Dm might come up with a reason to keep you in the room.

Because of the mechanics of the game, the groups basically stood around waiting for the time to be up (kind of boring).

While it might be nice to have the ability to use Knock to get out of a really bad SNAFU, we want to prevent everyone from saying “get this room looks hard, let just use Knock. My guess is that Jeff takes some of that into consideration when designing the rooms, their, challenges, and the potential solutions. We never seem to be able to predict all the possibilities. That is what makes it interesting for me as a DM, seeing what you guys come up with.

Couple of questions:

I read somewhere that said wondrous items found in the dungeon could not be used until a subsequent adventure. The token guide also says that thieves tools can only be used once per adventure. If there is one DM per room, how can this be tracked from room to room? Is it simply going to be the honor system?

Honor? Among thieves? ;)

Good question. I suppose one way of for the DM is to use a fine, permanent marker (Sharpee) to put some mark on it, though that means "defacing" the tokens. However, it could also become a neat badge of honor with the more sigs you collect.

I05A = Indy '05 Dungeon A
I05B = Indy '05 Dungeon B
SC05A= SoCal '05 Dungeon A
...

Just a thought.

The problem with that is what if you play BOTH adventures? You may have a mark on your token, but you haven't used it yet in that adventure. You would have the same problem in subsequent years.

No, check the "coding" I used as an example. It should handle that.

By declaring in the abbreviation that it was: Indy + Year ('05) + which adventure (A or B) a DM could quickly tell when it was used.

That way you could use it once in both adventures for that year and then fly out to Cali and use it twice again! You could get FOUR marks in one year! A true master thief.

Again, this is just an idea I have. It is up to TD officials to decide.

Finally, sometimes the honor code is simply best. Those who break it can have their guilt. The rest of the honest players can know they were in the right.

I thought he meant if he plays the same dungeon multiple times.
What if the second time he goes through dungeon a and goes to use it the dm says, hey you've already used it in a earlier room, instead of recognize it as a different adventure session.

Ooooooooooooooh! Good point... sorry I missed that.

Well, back to the honor system I guess. Otherwise the abbreviations start getting longer and still might not have enough meaning.

Hmmmm, perhaps the DM could trade the player for a "pink slip" that shows he used the token. The player then turns that slip in at the tavern or front desk for a replacement token after the adventure. The tokens are then circulated from the DM's to the tavern or front. Hey, that eliminates marking them too...

I would even volunteer to produce and provide the "slips".

I suppose slips would work, but sounds like the honor system would work best, or at least be the easiest to implement.

Speaking of various token rules, how will True Dungeoneers who don't frequent the website learn all this stuff? Will there be a required reading of an FAQ prior to entering the dungeon?

I suspect that they will have a poster or something with the faq on it. Like last year, most people will buy a pouch or two. They will then look up the effects of their tokens, or not. Some people in my group never thought to look at what spells their spellcaster could cast before we were in the dark!

They also watch a brief introductory video last year, but I don't know what all is in that. Last year, in the tavern I'd tell people that rumor tokens were used by giving them to me, specials used in the next room, etc.
When I'd trade, I'd say Arcane can be used by this person and this person. So they got a little overview from me. I don't know if the others worked it that way.

When I went through someone at the desk told us about the Arcane, Divine All difference, but only because I asked, we then had our Cleric and Wizard trade around, also I tried to use my +1 Great Axe :D but since I was the ranger I couldnt, I didnt even know...anyway a chart or something during training/prior to entry would be best for who can use what items

David Radtke was hard at work this week helping to put together a Token FAQ. We added it to the end of the standard Token Guide, so check it out. It has some cool new info for you about the TD combat system. He also updated some of the token descriptions to provide more info.

Also, keep posting your questions! We will update the Token Guide ocassionally. Thanks.
