How would people feel about the addition of primitive (i.e. arquebus) firearms into the True Dungeon mix?  I think that they could be a great addition to the current arsenal of missile weapons out there, as well as offering some chances of some nifty critical hits!

Its funny you bring that up as me and friend were talking about just such a thing the other day.  Sure the RoF would be slow, something like 1/3 but imagine the damage output.<br /><br />Besides what Rogue wouldn't want the opportunity to be a pirate and blast a creature with a flintlock pistol? lol  =D

  I was thinking of making it like the heavy crossbow, with the same damage and rate of fire, but with the added benefit that anyone who could use a sling could (possibly) be able to use an arquebus.<br /><br />As for flintlock, that might be a little two advanced, but a matchlock works pretty much the same way and in a sense is more reliable!

Flintlocks don't work well in the rain.  Plus they would have to take at least a round to load...measure powder, place patch, start ball, cut patch (unless using those pre-cut things), pack load, pull set trigger, then aim and fire...and what 50% chance the thing even sparks enough to light?  <br />The rogue is better off with a nice hand crossbow.<br /><br />Jennifer

I don't care for "guns" (even when called an arquebus) in D&D. It immediately halts my suspension of disbelief. To me, guns are a modern invention and anachronistic in TD, D&D, and the Fantasy genre.
Have you looked it up in the TDb ?

I am not familiar enough with the Eastern Monk's history to comment on their anachronicity.
Have you looked it up in the TDb ?

<br /><br />Guns are just as old as full plate armor.  Both of them were in use (and not only in small numbers) by the end of the 14th century.  The only difference is that one is from Europe and the other is from Asia.<br /><br />As for monks, the traditional D&D Monk is based on the warrior monks of Asia (such as the Shaolin Monks) who practiced martial arts.  Many people (myself included) feel that if D&D can "import" Asian martial arts experts then they can surely import firearms.  <br /><br />===================================================================================<br /><br />

  Loading a firearm is not much more difficult or labor intensive than loading a crossbow, and speeding it up to every other round compared to every third round is not a huge bending of reality.  As for rain, how often does it rain inside a dungeon?  =D  And as for the 50% chance, with a well-cut piece of flint and a well-maintained frizzen the flintlock was more reliable than firing only 50% of the time.  Besides, everyone knows that a flintlock made by dwarven master craftsman are quicker to load than Colonial firearms and dwarven knapped flint will fire 100% of the time!  =D

No one is saying that.  If they were they would be demanding that Jeff create tokens of their own choosing.  Quoting evidence to support one's argument is not demanding that something be put in the rules just because it is "in the books."<br /><br />As for weapons for flavor, ancient firearms are pretty damn cool!
