TOPIC: 2006 misprints

Re: 2006 misprints 17 years 7 months ago #13

First of all, any thing is possible.

Some of the older tokens could wind up in tokens bags, but as far as I know there is no concerned effort to mix in old tokens when stuffing bags, at least in the beginning.

Some old tokens can get inadvertently mixed in with the big bags of tokens when they come back from the printer. During the con, in the past, when we have run out of pre-bagged tokens we filled some with what ever we had on hand, old and new.

Jeff can correct me if I am wrong, but I think the norm is to stuff all purchased token bags with new tokens and use older “recycled” ones as treasure in the dungeon, if not used in that capacity, they are eventually removed from circulation and destroyed.

For instance all the tokens from the combos and artisan auction were held aside and taken back to Carbondale. Jeff mentioned that he might save them to use as a treasure horde in some future dungeon (think the 2004/2005 pirates gold chest with 40K coins but with tokens).

As far as the misprints go, as I mentioned before (at least I think I did) the tokens are printed in two stages, the back or “reverse” of the token with the TD logo is printed on the tokens when they are made. This blank stock is then sent to the printer to make the final tokens in the amounts/ratios needed. In the case of the misprints, some left over blank 2005 tokens must have been mixed in with the 2006 ones. Now if the obverse (colored text side) is one that was used in past years, you will never know, but if the obverse is unique to 2006 (e.g. Elvin chain) then it is pretty obvious you have a misprint. It will be hard to tell just how many of the misprints there are, but it should not be too many. From all the reports, it sounds like there have been 10 or so discovered so far.

I think the long term thought, is to maybe recycle some of the real old 2003 tokens and place them in the treasure generators as a surprise for the collectors, but beyond that, who knows.
I would offer up my observations as a player/buyer. (repeating most of what Dave just said with a players spin - sorry)

Last year at SoCal there was a serious shortage of tokens in the early days and older ones were finding their way into bags (that's how I got an hourglass of answers!!!!) - bags were being constructed (very smartly) at the con from items used in the dungeon and items that TD was able to trade for. (Think of this as the birth of the Artisan Auction - only it was to generate REDS to sell to the demanding public who was very sad bags were not up for sale.)

As for items in bags with past symbols - you should refer to the Guide to see if they indeed existed in the year that the symbol represents. Some, like plate mail, did exist, but the newer wording did not. Others like the +1 Longbow did not exist so these are varients on the 2006 Spider printing set. (how collectible does that make them - pretty cool - but not UBER COOL because set-builders will want the Spider backs, but those looking to have something out of the ordinary, will find these pretty COOL.)

BIG HUZZAH for having enough tokens on hand this year to not have to worry about bag building!!! Too bad the store ran out of binders and pages as I can tell you I bet I would have sold 5-10 more binders and many more pages if they were in stock.

Here's an idea: 40k tokens of the 1-5 gp variety, and you get to keep whatever you can stack in 2 minutes, without the stack falling over. Classic greed game, and a good test of manual Dex.
I do not know what Jeff thinks, but I remember a few years ago, maybe it was last year that Wizards had a guy doing a Magic card sculpture. At the end of the Con on Sunday, they knocked the sculpture down and for $1 they allowed people to go in and grab as many cards as they could in one handful, the money was supposed to have gone to charity. I wonder how that would go over with TD token fans?

Dave

Sounds like a good idea to me.

Huge pile of recycled items and you get a handful for $1 (or some such price) and the money goes to charity. Beats scrapping the old tokens.
Cardhalla was $1 donations to throw things at the structures and knock them down...all funds to go to charity.

Not sure they allowed people to follow-up and pick up cards - but that would sure make sense (easier to let others pay and pick them up than to pay a clean up crew.)

Mmmm, I really like that!

Better yet - hide a few Rares and UR's in the pile, and see whether people spend their time building that tall stack, or hunting for the pretty token(s) to put into the stack.

HUNT - gotta hunt...that is fun all by itself...

Hey - that's an idea - a scavanger hunt, it could be timed - and you get one item at a time to find - the person with the best time gets a prize - like a minute to grab what they can...WOW!

Since a lot of the cards used for Cardhalla are folded, I doubt there would be many people willing to take them.
