I'd actually hope so they return as well.

That said, I can seethe counter argument very clearly.

I hope they don't. Sure we all think it would be nice to have one, but likihood is that 99% would not get one. There were 11 and they actually ended up in the hands of only 9 people. They create 1's that DM's and Coaches need to know about with only 9 in play (not counting the +3 Holy Great Sword since it was created another way) it isn't too bad but additional ones would just make the matter worse. Designing tokens for balance is hard enough for the community. Creating more 1 of's just seems like lots of additional work for Jeff and Co. Just my two cents. As I said, I too would love to have one but just don't think it is worth the effort.

Apparently "never pick up a duck in a dungeon" is an inside joke from a source I wasn't familiar with.

Several DMs would impose arbitrary rules designed to entertain those who did know.

Some.players who also didn't know about it complained.

I just went with it.

I can see how people playing their one run a year, who didn't know about the thing, would have been displeased with it.

Not an easy thing. Caused a lot of friction when they came out, cause friction now because there's no chance for more people to get one.no easy solution

I'm in the "I hope there are no more Artifacts" category. But, like Chad, I see the counter argument.

TD was a much smaller/different community back then.

I mostly agree. I think it's great that the ones that exist, exist (especially Smackdown's), and I just recently had my first interaction with one as a DM (Kubu's Coin of Coincidence).

Personally, it'd never matter to me, as I don't have $10k to win an auction & fill out a recipe.

There are 2 major aspects of these tokens: the wild powers & the personalization.

For the wild powers, a combination of the best transmuted stuff gets you easily as good in terms of overall power without having the weird edge cases.

For the personalization, the various tokens named after people in the community kind of presses that button.

as to the future, if Jeff was motivated to do something like this again, I have 3 thoughts:

1) Personalized tokens could be made for people under certain circumstances (Patrons, Golden Tickets, Volunteering at every con in a year, Lucky treasure draw, transmute recipes, raffles or wheel of fortune, special success/clue/sacrifice in a dungeon, etc), but

2) these tokens would have modest and simple powers, like a party card bonus, extra HP, or a weapon with a slightly changed damage wheel. In this way, there would be some more work for all of our internet builders, but no real strain on Coaches and DMs, or

3) You could do 1 per 4-5 years, having special recipe parts (like a special ultra rare monster bit, a blessing that can be got from a specific NPC, something for sacrificing an UR weapon in the dungeon, and/or a single copy of a key ingredient that is randomly placed in the treasure of each con until it's found (and pushed to the next year if no one finds it), and if one person (possibly not allowed to anyone who has a soulforged token) gets the special treasures from all 4-5 years, or all the different random things that can be done, they can get a recipe to fulfill for a SF token. The exact methodology could be kept secret or be a meta puzzle or revealed only to people who get a certain other token/result that gives them eldritch knowledge, or maybe with a Wish ring wish.
I came here to sing and collect tokens, and I'm alllll out of money.

What about something you get as a reward for reaching a very high player level? Limit it to one per player, period.

That would somewhat limit the number of them out there, and it would be something that everyone could work towards while also supporting True Dungeon through ticket sales.

Make it a "lesser artifact". Perhaps limited to powers that exist on tokens already, but slotless (and no TE). Or maybe the power is simply that you gain a "lesser artifact" slot, that can hold any token? Or a token that combines two others (of your choice) similar to how Charm of Awakened Synergy worked.

Or a totally different idea: every year or so allow players to transmute an item that can be turned in for a draw from a special treasure box - that contains cool stuff and ONE artifact recipe opportunity. One chance per player, to avoid a pay-to-win scenario.

Or maybe it's all too much work.

Perhaps it's best to leave artifacts to be the stuff of legend.
