Driving isn’t an option for me because I live so far away so flying is the only option. I usually carry all of my tokens in my carry-on because they don’t weigh that. If you put it in your checked luggage they will weigh that and then you’ll be restricted to very little clothing. Essentially as long as the carry-on fits into their sized dimensions and the weight is immaterial.

I'm thinking the plan is to carry them on the flight....really concerned about getting through security with them.

If you have a hoard and live in the US, consider mailing your tokens to your hotel ahead of time. Even a large flat rate box is cheaper than checked bag fees on most airlines.

I fly with tokens all the time. Actually other than True Dungeon Celebration I have flown to every convention where I have played True Dungeon since 2011, and for most of those carrying lots of tokens. I would never check tokens of any value because your checked bag will probably get inspected and who knows if they will lose a token or two. But I often check sealed 10-packs I get from the runs or volunteering, or the less valuable stuff from treasure draws.

But the bulk of my tokens I carry onboard, primarily in poker chip cases. I get stopped by security the vast majority of the time. I tell them they are like poker chips with metal cores, they find them in my bag and do the bomb swab, and then I'm on my way.

So I don't think it is anything to be worried about, but pack your carry-on so it is easy for the TSA to get the tokens out and open the case without losing tokens, and plan for an extra 15 minutes to go through security (but it is usually only a 5 minute delay).

What I do worry about is the weight of my carry-on. On the way out I usually have my roll-aboard fully stuffed with tokens for transmuting. I'm talking over 100lb of tokens. Most airlines technically do have a weight limit for carry-on bags, and trying to get 100lb in the overhead bin without making it look really heavy is tricky. I also worry about being forced to gate-check the bag if the overhead bins are full.

Not to sound too judgy, but this strikes me as extremely dangerous. It’s not about getting away with something; 100lbs of tokens falling out of the overhead could kill somebody.

I would echo everything Kirk has said, though I usually don't have 100 pounds of tokens with me.

Security will stop you. Just be prepared for it. The easier you can make it, the better.

Anything of true value probably shouldn't be checked.

Consider paying for economy plus, early bird, or whatever else allows you to board early so there is no chance for having to check your carry on at the gate.

Kirk's advice is spot-on. The only thing I would add is to make sure that all of your tokens are in a single bag/case with nothing else in them. Run that bag through the x-ray on its own. Once you've made it through security, you can cram your token bag/case back into your regular carry-on.

This will save you time from having them go through all of your other belongings. It helps if they understand that it's not your first rodeo and you've done everything you can to make their job as straight-forward as possible.

Last year was my first time flying with tokens. I went through LAX. When the TSA agent saw what I was carrying, he commented- "oh, we've seen a few people come through with these."

Maybe I flew out shortly after BPSym

I've never seen a suitcase fall out of the overhead bin in my 500+ commercial flights. Also a 40-lb suitcase could also kill somebody, especially a child. I'm just careful when putting it up and pulling it down.

I have never "Seen" it happen however, that is what killed the world famous spokes salesman, I think his name was billy. I have no idea how heavy that case was and it had to have been kinda like a freak accident but it can happen.I will admit to having loaded some REALLY heavy carry ons up in to the overhead.

from the Wikipedia entry for Billy Mays :
Initially, there was incorrect speculation that he had died of a head injury after he was struck on the head by luggage after an airline landing mishap where tires blew out. [24]

It goes on to say he died from heart disease aggravated by cocaine use.
Have you looked it up in the TDb ?

Good idea. Haven't had to fly with them yet but if I ever go to PAX South this thread has been helpful!
