What I do worry about is the weight of my carry-on. On the way out I usually have my roll-aboard fully stuffed with tokens for transmuting. I'm talking over 100lb of tokens. Most airlines technically do have a weight limit for carry-on bags, and trying to get 100lb in the overhead bin without making it look really heavy is trick.

Not to sound too judgy, but this strikes me as extremely dangerous. It’s not about getting away with something; 100lbs of tokens falling out of the overhead could kill somebody.

I've never seen a suitcase fall out of the overhead bin in my 500+ commercial flights. Also a 40-lb suitcase could also kill somebody, especially a child. I'm just careful when putting it up and pulling it down.

I was on a flight that hit bad turbulence landing at LaGuardia. We hit a down draft or something. The plane felt like it hit a wall, the lights went out, some overheads popped open and stuff was falling on people. I remember being held down by the seatbelt as the plane fell out from under me. A couple of women, and maybe a few guys, were screaming. When we landed, the whole flight crew was at the front of the plane saying “buh-bye now” as they do, but I’ve never seen such strained smiles.

Which is to say, I have. The weight limits are placed on carry-ons for a reason.

I fly with my tokens every year... a huge shock I'm sure :)

I don't have as many as you of course, but regarding security, approach one of the people before you get them on the belt for the scanner.

Mention they are for a game and are like poker chips with a metal core.

Offer to show them before they scan, odds are they will not bother to open them and will warn the person doing the scanning.

This has gotten me through many times with out problems.

Of course, that bag is also usually full of tokens, but I can't fit everything into a bag that can fit under the seat in front of me. So I usually have two carry-ons and one checked bag (the latter mostly for clothes).

We buy, sell, and trade True Dungeon tokens. We also have a convenient consignment program where you can sell your own tokens.

To echo what others have said:

1. I fly with tokens every year in my carry on bag.

2. You can pretty much count on getting pulled aside for secondary screening, but it's not big deal, they know that coins or poker chips look like that on the X-Ray, they just have to pull it out because they can't see through them so there might be something underneath them.

3. You can minimize hassle by placing them within their own bag-within-a-bag and the pulling that token only bag out and putting it through on its own.

I will tell you from flying with mine and the wife's token collection (about 50lb in a rolling bag and 10-15 on each of us) just make sure that you don't throw them into a bag, if you can get something to organize them like a planco or poker case so they are standing on end it will help alot with security. I use clear lure cases and they don't even open them. The bags of random tokens show up as a mass and they want to pull every single one out.

Thanks for the advice everyone....I'm planning on using a poker chip case in my backpack and I've managed to use up a good but of gold and trade items to help cut the weight. Might need to find someone willing to convert my leftover tokens from treasure pulls into trade items before flying home.

one other piece of advice is to proactively pull them out when you get to the security line. i do that every year because i know they are going to ask me to take them out anyway. it also makes it a lot less likely that they will do the secondary check where they take everything out of your bag for you because they can at least see that they are essentially poker chips.

Arnold wrote: Kirk's advice is spot-on. The only thing I would add is to make sure that all of your tokens are in a single bag/case with nothing else in them. Run that bag through the x-ray on its own. Once you've made it through security, you can cram your token bag/case back into your regular carry-on.

This will save you time from having them go through all of your other belongings. It helps if they understand that it's not your first rodeo and you've done everything you can to make their job as straight-forward as possible.

Last year was my first time flying with tokens. I went through LAX. When the TSA agent saw what I was carrying, he commented- "oh, we've seen a few people come through with these."

Maybe I flew out shortly after BPSym

That must be it! :)

But when I have flown, i make sure I have my valuable tokens (anything I equip, purps plus, etc.) in my carry-on, and the bulk stuff goes in the suitcase in a binder and in bags wrapped (but not sealed) in plastic bags. I have never been stopped at LAX, but I have been stopped a couple times leaving Indy (which seems weird to me - I would think they would get used to seeing stuff like this after GenCon).
