No that's the point that Kurt Reznor / Kent and I are arguing against. Just because you lose a die roll for your first preference class doesn't mean you should get stuck with all the leftovers.

Why not? If you're not willing to work it out like adults and are instead forcing a die roll, why shouldn't you risk having to pick from the leftovers instead of negatively impacting the whole rest of the party that did work things out like adults? Maybe having a disincentive to the die roll is exactly what some people need to work things out without the die roll.

My concern is making everyone reroll might change several other already finished lines of the party card/create new arguments.

The rules proposal I posted makes it so once the dmcoach starts filling out a line that class must be played by that player.

Frankly that should be the rule no matter what else is decided, along with a requirement that the coach won’t start filling in a card prior to the ticketed start time. (perhaps coaches could look the other way at their discretion).

I might be misunderstanding then. The way I read your suggestion, players 1-9 can come in, pick classes, start getting recorded. Then someone could roll in and pull rank triggering a group reprioritization (so that the person having rank pulled on them isn't stuck picking from just whats left). Wouldn't that necessitate at least one other player (who may have already had their class recorded) switching? (unless of course the person having rank pulled on them picks one of the unused classes)?

If I'm understanding correctly (which granted I might not be?), that seems like it might be a huge incentive to try and get the coach to record you first to lock in your class selection (which could be another argument waiting to happen since who gets recorded first is almost entirely arbitrary at present)

I'm proposing that everyone who is present when the coach gets there gets a class at that time.

The dialog would be something like this:

Coach arrives, there are 7 players, 4 have cards.

Coach: Hello All, we're going to do class selection now, I see some of you already have your eye on some. Please take a moment to finalize your selections, one class per character.

Party: starts hammering it out

Meanwhile, attendee 8 arrives.

Coach: To attendee 8. Welcome! We've already begun class selection, in just a moment when those 7 get done we'll see what's left.

8: Bollux! I'm a level eleventy-two player, fetch me the Snorlax class!

Coach: Sorry, the rules are that the players who are here when player selection begins make their selections first.

8: Ah! I was no familiar with that rule. I shall take this time to post on Facebook about how excited I am about this year's adventure - carry on!

Party: Coach - we've got a question, Alice and Bob both want to play the Kender - what do we do.

Coach: Easy [explains roll off procedure].

[Party 1-7 rolls off, selects cards].

Coach: 8, here are the classes left, what would you like to play.

8: Sweet! Orcish Snorlax is still available, I'll play that.

[Coach begins filling in party card]

[Players 9, 10 arrive]

9&10: We can only play Be-bob and Rocksteady, make it so coach!

Coach: Sorry, I've begun filling in the party card, Be-bop is taken. Rocksteady is still available, as are 3 other classes, they are on the table over there.

9&10: Being reasonable people, we accept the coaches ruling, although we dislike it. Let us all develop a team cheer!

I had one time where somebody arrived late, dumped a whole bag of tokens and asked me (coach) to make them a build while they ran some errands.

Thanks for helping me out Kirk :P

How did that work out for them?

Seems like a great opportunity for malicious compliance: 'Oh hey, you had a lot of tokens to help the party, so I distributed them - thanks for your generosity.'

I think the other people in the party decided to help out. And really it was two full gallon zip-lock bags, not organized at all.

I think no matter what the selection process is some people will end up being happy. Changing it to something else, will still end up with some people being unhappy.

If 7 people are going to roll, a 6 sided die wont do the job. Hey, finally a use for that 30: sided die someone gave me 35 years ago! B)
