TOPIC: The new World of Warcraft Boardgame

For those who play World of Warcraft as I do, I just picked up the brand new World of Warcraft boardgame. (released Dec. 9th I believe)

My two boys and I played it and it's fantastic. You pick alliance or horde, you pick your class, you level your character, complete quests, fight monsters straight from the online game, get new equipment, powers and talents as you level, pvp, etc.

It's probably the best board game I've played since Axis and Allies. But if you like World of Warcraft the online game, then you will love this. If you want any details on it or have any questions, let me know.

That is good to hear - I didn't care much at all for the first game "Warcraft the boardgame" (is that what it was called?)

yep, the other boardgame is just Warcraft the boardgame. Based on their real time strategy games, and was terrible.

This new one is from Fantasy Flight games who make extremely in depth games like Twilight Imperium, Descent, etc. (Incidentally, Descent is like Hero Quest on mega steroids... extremely awesome dungeon crawler game.)

Anyways, the WoW game is really nice, and the board itself is extremely detailed having the northern part of both continents... from Southshore on up.

I own Talisman and it's nothing at all like that. Don't get me wrong, I love talisman, it's a romp. But WoW the boardgame is much more in depth, especially when you start levelling your character, gaining abilities, the whole combat system, etc.

I can't really compare it to too much I guess but it definitely has elements of many types of games in it. However, almost everything in the online game is right in the board game which is what makes it the most fun.

Edit: I wanted to add that the quality of the game pieces and accessories are excellent. Very high quality board, art, cards, etc. No flimsy stuff that won't last 2 seconds if you know what I mean. Then again the game is $80 so I would expect nothing short of perfection for that kind of money. But I wasn't disappointed.

Incidentally, I loved Hero Quest! I am still waiting to play Dungeon Twister - is that also pretty good?

Ya know, dungeon twister sure looked really fun. My friend Tom and I got to look at it a couple of times at GenCon but never really got to dig in and play. So I can't give you any heads up on that one. I do know that the creator really is very into it, and has a 'love' for it if you know what I mean. He is coming out with all 3D walls and such just for the game. Pretty cool.

We LOVE Descent. We had our regular gaming group over to play a few weeks ago. We finished a 5 hour adventure, and I expected everyone to head home. Nope, we had to play again. Didn't get finished until 4:30 am.

I think they even want to play it again next month instead of our regular D&D session.

By the way, we got ours on eBay for a lot less than what it sold for at GenCon. I think we payed less than $50 including shipping, instead of $80.

Oh! Love board games. I'll have to look into these. Six of my college cohorts and myself get together once a year for a long 3 or 4 day gaming weekend. We've been doing it for 10 years now. We usually try to find a new board game to play during it along with some computer LAN games and AD&D.

These sound right up our alley.

So... we gonna play at GenCon?

Ok, just did some quick reading on Descent from the link Ellinder gave.

Descent looks great! I want to hear more! It looks like some have even produced module variations to the game for added fun.

So one person is the GM plus 2-5 players. OOoooh, maybe I could incorporate my Dwarven Forge dungeon pieces into it... hmmm.

I believe a trip to EBay or the store is forthcoming.

Any of you TD'ers play Cribbage? My most favorite card game. Would bring my peg board along next year if there was someone (s) to play with.......?????
