TOPIC: Hotel in 2012

Re: Hotel in 2012 12 years 2 months ago #13

I guess because they want to have a day between badge reg and hotel reg in case there are any glitches. Also, I don't know this for sure or not, but it's possible that the housing bureau is not open on the weekend in case someone needed to call them?

You're right - they're a Mon-Fri 8-5 bunch.

I never use Gencon to get a hotel. I usually use expedia or the hotel website and get a better deal (Marriott Rewards pays off). Hotel soon. I still have to buy tokens!

Just curiously, anybody who HAS been through the hotel mafia, what is the average price per night? (by hotel mafia, i mean the housing bureau of course)

Average? Not sure. They have three pages of hotels on the list. Westin doubles were $183, and seem to be on the higher end. Of course unattached rooms were cheaper.

We stay at the Westin because it's closest and we have some mobility issues. It worked well for us last year, and this year will be even better.

I understand how it looks when the housing bureau seems to be given first dibs on all the rooms, but my experience has been somewhat different.

If you can approach the hotels through a rewards program and get a good deal, by all means use that avenue.

If you can't, or aren't familiar with the layout of the convention center, then use the housing bureau. My conversations with them have paid solid dividends, allowing us to arrange the exact accomodations we were after. They even went after the Westin to clear up an issue with a minibar - something that you wouldn't expect them to get involved with.

Yes, yes, I know; I'm the first one in line complaining when I sense my choices being artificially limited by a monopoly. But in this case, it worked for us.

Here's some hotel data from the past few years. I can't guarantee that it's accurate, and I forgot to update it in 2011, but it might be helpful for reference.

The housing block rate is considerably lower than what you'll find at Expedia (etc). That didn't always seem to be the case, but now it seems to be universal.

I've done both the Marriott and the Westin. Both are pretty much the same. The Westin was a touch better in service and the Marriott a touch better in atmosphere. I was leaning toward going back to the Westin again this year since TD is in the ICC now. But, I'm going to try out the Embassy Suite for the extra space and the complimentary breakfast. It is about a block and a half away from the ICC, but I figure food and room should make up for that.

The Suites are nice. I have stayed there three different years in the past. The walk isn't bad. The extra room is nice, we had six people one year...now I don't know that we told the hotel that, but it wasn't overly crowded and split that many ways the price isn't too shabby. We parked in the garage next to the hotel and it seemed similar to the other downtown garages at the time, also they added it into the hotel bill so we didn't have to deal with it separately. The breakfast was good and we tended to grab some fruit or prepackaged snack for later in the day. As far as ambiance or service well I don't know that it was anything special, it was okay for a hotel. I stayed at the Sheriden one year, now they have ambiance and service...and you can tell when you get the bill :)

6 in a suite is luxurious. In my grad-school and postdoc days we had 12 people there, though no more than 9 any given night (unless someone crashed without paying-- you start to lose track). With that many gamers, inevitably 2-4 of them have serious snoring issues and/or sleep apnea. I spent one night in a stair well to avoid the din.

I booked my group rooms at the Marriott again this year since, we really enjoy having the connected rooms, and despite TD not being there is is still pretty close to everything maybe an extra 3 minute shuffle to reach TD but still close enough.
