TOPIC: Now that's HOT!!!

I am a complete junkie for Stuff On My Cat and APOD .<br /><br />And today APOD bit for Today is wild!<br />You must see for yourself!<br />Talk about HOT!!<br /><br />The plasma they used as a medium in this epxeriment got zapped with 20 million amps of electricity and to further focus it they had it contained in a magnetic field. You can see the electricity branched out like a spider web in the picture. This was called the Z-machine, Vertical wires give the Z Machine its name. The plasma reached a temperature in excess of two billion Kelvin,  for a brief time, hotter than the interiors of stars!<br /><br />Now that's HOT!!!!<br />

Ummmmmm, WOW.  :O<br /><br />I'm speechless. And THAT'S a rare occurrence.

I don't know about you but I am a tiny bit concerned when the scientist say "Gosh, we don't quite know why it got so hot".  <br /><br /> I also worry about the little sign in the background reading "1005 days without an industrial accident or igniting the Earth's atomsphere."

<br /><br />I see it more as a site where the people are getting humiliated for picking on their cats, because the cats obviously don't care.  =D<br />If I tried to put anything like that on my cat, she'd tear it to shreds and kick me out of my apartment.  (And I have to wonder why people never come over?)  heh.

<br /><br />I kind figured there was a moment of extreme panic when the temperature gauge was pegged off scale and they were wondering if the "magnetic field" would hold the reaction.  I also like it when they mention there was a "small explosion" also presumably contained.   <br /><br />Dave

How do you pump 20 million amps into something and it not explode? *little laugh*<br />What I want to know is how they measured that temp?<br />Either way that picture is very cool!

<br />My guess is that it was a mathematical extrapolation.  Any previously built equipment would have tipped off scale.<br /><br />
