TOPIC: Recommendations for Artist Metalworker

Recommendations for Artist Metalworker 2 years 3 months ago #1

I am seeking advice/referrals from fellow fantasy fans. I am looking for someone who does artistic metalwork and, possibly, someone who does large custom wood carvings.

Isabelle and I are building our dream home near Boulder. It is the same property with the farm where our non-profit grows produce for local food pantries. We have a custom home builder (Saul - amazing builders) and architects helping us. We want this home to stay in the family for generations so it is important that we try and make it something that says something about us as well.

The front door is an important feature. We want to put in the Doors of Durin as our front door. It will be a wood and glass double-door with metalwork designs mirroring what appears in Tolkien's sketches for the Doors of Durin (the ones opening to Moria.)

We are looking for an artist metalworker who does art that will do a piece like this (the metalwork will surround the door on both sides and above it as well as cover parts of the glass.)

We aren't looking for this to be cheap or to get a "friends and family discount." We'll insist on paying the artist well for their best work. We also need the work completed by no later than August 2022.

Anyone know someone?

What do we want? Evidence based science! When do we want it? After peer review!

I don't know anyone but I absolutely love this idea.

One friend recommended Sugarpost sugarpost.com/

Another mentioned his friend Jose would either be able to do the work or almost certainly know someone who could:

I'll let you know if I hear any others. It's still early in the day in the artist world

I'll post photos once we get it built. Designing it took a year (which was ok since permitting in Boulder is a long and difficult process.) We just finished the foundation and are moving into framing in the next few weeks. The target for move-in is November 2022 but material delays could push that back a few months. Having grown up without much and having lived modestly for quite a while, this is the one thing we are splurging on as I near retirement.

Once finished, the home will include the Durin Door for the front door, a bookcase hidden door to one of the bedrooms (for one of my sons), a hidden bookcase door for my study, a family room bookshelf built into the walls that is between 25-30 feet long and 15 tall with a sliding ladder on it for access, and a gaming room either in the basement or in the loft of our new barn complete with a large gaming table and lots of bookshelves for games and tokens. Currently, I am leaning towards the barn loft for the gaming space since the barn is only used for produce prep and storage and storing equipment (it won't smell like animals and is reasonably well insulated.) I want to do something similar to the Gamehole room in WI.

You'll be able to tell gamers live there :)

The bookcase doors weren't as expensive as you'd think. They are more than a regular door but not by a ton. For $1K you can get a nice one. For $3K you can get a hugely customized one. Home depot has kits to do it:
www.homedepot.com/b/Doors-Windows-Interior-Doors-Hidden-Doors/N-5yc1vZcdfw

Looking at the home depot link, it gives me an idea for another possible door like that we can tuck into the house.

I happen to live in Colorado. Would it be possible to get a tour when it's complete?
