TOPIC: No Chainmaille Wench at Gen Con this year.

No Chainmaille Wench at Gen Con this year. 14 years 11 months ago #1

Howdy y'all,

Yes I'm still alive, mostly. Life has been full of ups and downs the past six months.

Some of you who know me personally might remember that at Gen Con last year I was really worried about my dad. When he came to our house to pet-sit for us while we were in Indy, I was shocked at how frail he seemed. Shortly after we got home, he was officially diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. The doctors believe he has been showing symptoms since the mid-80s, so were hopefull it was a slow progressing form. But he has been deteriorating before my eyes. We had to sell his house down south and move him in with us around Thanksgiving. He just had knee-replacement surgery two weeks ago, and the healing process is really taking it out of him. Basically, we aren't comfortable leaving him alone for more than very short periods of time (less than an hour).

We also have pretty much decided we will not be coming to Gen Con this year. This is partly for financial reasons, and partly due to not being sure what kind of shape he'll be in. I'll be putting a post in the Exhibitor section of the GC forum about not having a booth, with a little more info regarding my chainmaille.

For those of you who are privy to some of the more "unconventional" aspects of my life, things have been rocky there too. That's all I feel comfortable posting on a public forum.

So that's a brief update. Know that I think about y'all often, and miss hanging out here. But life has forced me to "grow up" a little in order to deal with things.

*hugs*
Aw... we'll miss you so much, Heidi!

I hope everything goes as well as it possibly can with your Dad. I have done a great deal of caring for frail elderly individuals and their family, and know it can drain you of energy like nothing else.

Take good care of yourself, and may the powers that be grant you strength.

So sorry your dad is so ill. I remember taking care of my mom when she had cancer and feeling so helpless. Remember to do things for you, too.

I miss you. Things are not the same without your presence.

Thanks everyone.

I'm hopeful that Dad will get a little better, but the healing process is definitely going to take longer than when he had his other knee done 3 years ago. It's taking a lot out of him, and his other health conditions complicate matters. We just have to wait and see if he's going to get back to a point where he can get around better and doesn't need oxygen all the time, or if he's going to continue to decline.
