TOPIC: Fortune Lenses

Fortune Lenses 8 years 7 months ago #1

I was just curious as to whether Jeff issued a rationale as to why the Lenses of Fortune don't stack? It seems silly to not allow for 1 extra treasure pull when you can stack other items to get 10+ pulls.

An AoTF with the lensesw would have a been a nice touch for newer players or those of us who don't have all of the other high dollar tokens.

It's an attempt to bottleneck the eventual restacking of greed tokens and to prevent the loot cap from going up, again.

The whole reason the Charm of Avarice was created was to encourage players to use something other than Horn of Plenty/Ring of Riches/Charm of Good Fortune in the Neck/Ring/Charm slots, respectively.

If it or the Amulet of Treasure Finding had been allowed to stack, it would be starting the problem all over again.

You can wade through it all the discussion around this in the 2015 token development area under the All Things Treasure Token subforum, it's not for the faint of heart - I don't think Jeff has really said much about the rationale.

One of the relevant factors which I will add is this:

Since the Lenses don't stack withe *any* treasure enhancer, it means that they are much more readily available to the casual token player. If they stacked, the big token collectors would grab them, and there would be far fewer available to trade/sell for GP to the casual players.

That makes sense to me. I've got three extras that I'm trying to figure how to get rid of for GP. :) However, most people here on the forums will already have other better Treasure Enhancers (And I have Charm of Good Fortune and Ring of Riches), so I have them...but no way to get rid of them yet. Or even a decent idea of what a good GP asking price would be.

I gave one to a friend who returned to GC and TD after a long absence. They are great for inexperienced players.

I am thinking the best value would be that 3 of them make for 76% of a Darkwood Plank.

They were concepted from the beginning to be a Treasure-Enhancing token for the more casual/newer player and part of that concept was that they were not allowed to stack with other Treasure-Enhancers.

Note: The token that ended up as the Amulet of Treasure Finding was originally concepted as an UltraRare googles.

Unless you have friends you're running with that have no enhancers at all, your best bet is to mulch them for Darkwood Planks. Your target market is the folks with no TEURs, and most of them probably aren't going to do enough runs next year to make the token worth the cost plus shipping.

Because they're Rare.

Previously, all treasure-enhancing tokens have been at least Ultra Rare or higher. When designing tokens, one needs to take rarity into consideration. If a power is given on a rarity tier lower than it was previously, it comes with a limitation.

Here's an example of what I'm saying. In 2013, the power of the Uncommon token Boots of the Vale exactly replicated that of the 2003 Rare token Boots of Elvenkind . Since the BotV are at a lower rarity, they have the drawback that they only work outdoors. The 2009 token Boots of the Underdark also duplicated BoEk, but since it's an Ultra Rare token, it got a bonus +2 To Hit.
Have you looked it up in the TDb ?

And I may do that...definitely need more Trade items for future goals. I did trade one to a friend who has no others. I just hate to mulch TEs. :-) Even at that level, just in case there are others who have no TEs and that bonus one would be cool for.

I was pretty happy buying 3 for my group at $1.50 but I would agree that there isn't much market for them above the price of just transmuting them. If you have a solid group of people buying 4 lenses is much cheaper than 1 amulet for the same amount treasure.
