I believe the reason why Jeff mentioned 'gambling', is because gencon has a no-no policy on that. And doesn't want to get into any trouble with GC.

Joyus, you are right. I am sure there is a GenCon policy against gambling and we want to abide by GC rules but does token for token games of chance count as gambling or just part of the True Dungeon experience?

I admittedly do not know.
I was tossing that out there mostly for those who may not have known why Jeff mentioned it.
I'd ask on the GC forums, but they don't even allow talk of Token Trading there its against their rules. So I don't know if it would be kosher to inquire about playing games of chance with tokens.

I would hazard that token gambling for more tokens is ok. Come on I have played in their annual Poker tournament :P Let's not call Texas Holdem a game of chance (even though everyone insists it is all skill).

If you wanted to be super strict about this, those draw pouch games during GenCon Indy this year can be considered gambling because the player "pays" up a token for a chance at a better or worse token.

Games of chance like that are probably anathema because
a) Gencon cannot regulate fairness in odds
b) Possibly a city statute somewhere forbidding it. I do recall Indiana is riverboat casino only.

As far as something else to put gold into, hadn't it been mentioned before about the possibility of being able to recharge a wand once it's charges were all used up? I would think there would be a gold cost to that.

Kim
These are some cool ideas! I hope we will have the volunteer and monetary resources to make some of them happen. One bummer though...some of them would be considered gambling and thus illegal! The fact that you are paying real money for a random amount of fake money makes buying anything "real" with the fake money a no-no. So long as it stays "in-game" we are cool.

With regard to number 5, I would think this would be OK if you were gambling GP tokens for GP tokens because there is no money changing hands. Is this not how it works? Any lawyers here?

I think it would be okay so long as everything stays "in game". For instance, buying blessings or titles is cool...but buying Tshirts or mugs would be bad. We really need an Indiana lawyer as laws vary from state to state. Some states don't even allow clubs to do raffles and such.

Jeff,
You might want to contact Arron Witten from The Gamestation. He runs the Texas Hold Em tournament and is pretty up on the gaming laws.

Kim

That would be the bomb and I would definitely want to recharge all my Wands of Lightning Bolts. I think I have burned through 5 in the two years participating I have done. However, that would require some way to remove "ticked off" squares from the token. I'd hate for TD crew to be holding a bunch of extra super rare wands to give in exchange for gold and a used wand.

Maybe for the recharge they could give out a card or something showing how many charges there are?
Boots of Escaping are a must for 2007!

How about if it allows the wearer to be under the effect of a Sanctuary spell?

That would be cool - but would we print the rules of the sanctuary spell directly on the Boots Token, or would the poor DMs have to memorize or use a cheat sheet when the boots are used?
I'd kinda rather avoid making the boots be anything which the DMs have to track - although if its something which could be factored in when making the Party Card, that would be do-able.

Would boots of escaping work much like a cloak of displacement...or a ring of evasion??? Or be able to function as any one of the three depending on a die roll?

1-5 - no effect (hit as normal)
6-10 - sanctuary
11-15 - evasion
16-20 - displacement

Fun, but DM-intensive. Plus, it would complicate the flow of combat, and we're trying to work away from that.

Here's a few ideas (not all good ideas, but brainstorming fodder, at least):

- Boots of Escaping work as an Elven Cloak, but can be activated at will without taking a round to don the item.

- Player may invoke Boots of Escaping to flee from one attack aimed at him, but must remain out of Combat after Escaping.

- Boots simply add +2 Dex (kinda like the Gloves of Dexterity)

- Boots add +3 Dex (to be a little different than the Gloves o' Dex, like the Girdle is different from the Ogre Str. Gauntlets. But that's topping a purp with another purp, rather than topping a red with a purp. And the GoD are already plenty powerful)

- Wearer may use Boots as a free escape/dodge in NON-COMBAT situations (ie, escaping a poison dart, or falling stalactite)*

- Boots act as Cloak of Displacement

- Only on HARDCORE Mode, the boots allow wearer a 50% chance to escape "Death" himself, and come back to life at 1HP.

Comments?

* I don't like this option, as "escaping" kinda implies a foe to escape from.

Nah. Just add another token. 'Free wand use' token. Then when they want to use a wand but not suck a charge, just hand that over to the DM and no marking needs to be done. Even a burnt out wand would work as long as you had the free wand use token.
