The more and more I think about it, the more and more I love the idea of purchasing a Wand Charge token. I've never been a big fan of using depletable items so I've never really liked Wands in True Dungeon (vs. permanent items). At least with "free wand use" tokens, I don't need to add ugly black marks to my shiny new wand tokens!

Of course this would mean that Magic Missile and Melf's Acid Arrow Wands are even more obsolete since you can recharge Lightning Bolt Wands. And the Wand of Cure Light Wounds will certainly jump in value. You may also want to limit how many recharges a person can buy at a time. Otherwise the token-rich might buy them all and then the Hardcore monsters will get quickly vaporized by an endless stream of lightning bolts.

...

I definitely think this is heading down the right direction. And in the future, there could even be Wondrous Item recharges (Jar of Courage and Necklace of Fireballs) and Ring Recharges (Ring of the Ram but NOT Ring of Three Wishes!).

I think this idea of spendng "wand charge" tokens is a very interesting idea. Since most wands are rechargable in standard D&D I think it has always been something in the back of players minds. I do know as a DM that some players are reluctant to use them currently.

To avoid some wands (e.g. Magic Missile) from being overshadowed or others (e.g. L-bolt, CLW) from being overpowered it might be good to have the more powerful wands require say TWO "wand charge" tokens to fire off the effect. This would help balance out the power. The only downside I see to some wands costing more charges to fire is it is one more rule for the DMs to remember...

UNLESS... all new wand tokens didn't have check boxes and simply listed the number of wand charge (tokens) it cost to fire. So long as the player had enough to hand over he could fire away. This makes the wand a much more permanent item.
I tell you what...if you buy $5,000 worth of tokens I will make up a special unique token that would be something like an artisan token (+2 Diamond Ring of whatever)! Anyone can buy their honey a diamond ring (old hat), but here is an opportunity to buy her a one of a kind ring! Heck...we will even throw in a free wedding in the Tavern!

:occasion14:

I dunno Smak, Jeff puts up a very convincing arguement here. Maybe you could talk him into making the token out of a precious metal with a little gem in the center. I'm sure he'd be willing to work with you.

=D

Or, you could have the recharge tokens be wand specific. Maybe this year there will be a Rare Lighting Bolt Recharge Token, next year a Rare Magic Missile recharge token, etc? Maybe a Rare token could completely recharge the wand and a common token would recharge one use (just hand the token in to fire the wand).

Either a new wand charge token found in pouches or maybe this is another opportunity for gold and stuff to be used - in other words another candidate for COMBO items...allow the players to trade in stuff for the token wand charges. (I would make wand charges cheep!)

And like INDY said - it would be cool if there were no more check boxes on the wands...

The only downside I see right off is what happens when a player gets a wand in a pouch just before a run. COOL right - NOPE - no charges to go with that thing! DOH.

If recharges are wand specific, I think things might get confusing (not to mention expensive with all the unique token printings)

And if they aren't, then it is going to be difficult to set a cost for the recharge (i.e. Wand of Cure Light Wounds vs. Wand of Magic Missle).

:|

#1 All wands are not created equal...

That said - there is really nothing wrong with the current system - just that people are reluctant to use wands in the game is all.

Personally I like the charge tokens as it gets wands into the game and can be a decent use for all players to use up some gold and common scrolls...???

As far as trying to keep things simple - group wands into 2-3 categories and assign a cost per single charge. Does that sound about as simplistic as it can be made given #1 above?

I don't get the fuss really. So people won't use the recharge tokens for crap wands. So what? That only seems to make sense to me. I don't see why it makes a difference really. As for how the 'value' of the token would flux...it'll trade for whatever it trades for. Let the market decide it.
