Well if we get a ranged only monster we just take the push damage for not killing it. Maybe some day on Nightmare if you don't kill a monster the party dies but not yet.

Actually there has been discussion about a party taking excessively long to delay monster attacks and therefore the monster still gets in so many rounds of combat. I don't remember where that conversation went, but I thought someone said that was not a legitimate strategy. I will see if I can find that thread after my meeting.

Spell casters are looking like our only options. The usual "wait for room 7 to unload the big guns" strategy may not work here. Well, ranger is in there as well, but a 7 token ranger is not going to solo a nightmare monster.

Well spell casters could always take a looooong time to contemplate their skill tests :P

Yeah I think that was part of what was discussed, but I dunno. I will see if I can find the thread.

Found what I was thinking of. Wasn't exactly what I remembered and was not an official stance on it. But here it is:

So the Cleric and I did some rough planning here. Assuming there is going to be 4 combats (could be 3 and if so we are lucky). We are going to be dealing with auto hits by the monsters.

Most characters except the two being guarded by the paladin are going to have AC around 11/12 (Monk at 17). Regardless the average to hit on Nightmare last year was 13 so figure every monster will hit almost every time. Average damage last year was about 15 (not factoring the large damage of the Beholder).

Guessing the average fight will be 4 rounds (due to lower damage output) we are talking about 60 ish points of damage. IF the monster gets two swings we are talking 120 of total room damage. The Druid and Cleric can base heal 44 points (1 for 1st level + 10 bonus) x 2 (LoDS) which means they are likely to be healing at least half the time. Couple that with the possible puzzle damage it will be close on healing spells.

This will certainly be a much closer (fair) fight unless we get all ranged. ;-)

My main concern is being able to hit the last boss. Ac tends to be higher.
