Re: True Dungeon Timeline: 2007 Info 9 years 9 months ago #49

Were the first Onyx tokens available in 2007? I thought they came a little later, but I'm not certain.
Have you looked it up in the TDb ?
Please post TDb corrections in this thread .

Can anybody provide more info on True Heroes? How did it work exactly with combat, etc? Did you play specific heroes? Were there tokens? What were the adventures like (plot, locale, etc)?

I played both years. Xmen took on Magneto and the Brotherhood. The other year we played the Avengers cannot recall the villains though. I played Colossus and then Cap and The Wasp. Used velcro balls for combat, may have had baseball like cards for our stats. There were no tokens, sadly I don't think people back then were into Superheroes as much as they were into the True Dungeon. I love both, myself.

Thanks, I'd love to see something like this done again!

I know the event was sponsored by the guys who made the card game, and it used a similar combat mechanic. They actually had magnetic copies of the character cards, which they would put on a metal plate in the wall. I vaguely recall something being important about how you were placed - like characters in the front row could be attacked by melee but characters in the back row could only be hit by ranged. Then you used magnetic (or velcro?) balls to throw at the enemy character cards.

Characters got cards (from the game) to use for their attacks.

Each hero got a special power, too. Like Spidey had Spidey-sense, Cap had a (prop) Shield which he could use to physically deflect an attack which came in the form of a fuzzy ball tossed over one of the walls. Nightcrawler got to *BAMPF* to the other side of a locked gate (the DM would actually take you aside and let you walk thru a back corridor, so when the party said "Hey, Nightcrawler can do this!" you could jump out dramatically - often before the party realized you'd left.) It was a fun game to play, but I think TD's puzzles and plots beat True Heroes plots hands down.

It was magnetic balls I think. It was a lot of fun, but it was much more formulaic than True Dungeon. I had the feeling if you played it multiple times it would be very similar each time. I'd still really love doing something like it again though - True Dungeon type gameplay in a whole different genre.

My notable story with True Heroes was in 2005, when my friend and I joined several other people for the adventure, my friend and I were the only two that had known each other before the game. Out of the characters that were available, Thor definitely seemed the most powerful, and several of us wanted to play him. One player in particular kept insisting that he play Thor though, and refused to allow the choice to be made randomly, yelling "I paid real money for this game!". It was pretty funny, as if all of us hadn't paid the same amount to play, or that nobody else's money was real. So we all backed off and let him play Thor. Wasp definitely seemed like the weakest character and nobody wanted to play her, but my friend took her when nobody wanted her. So - the guy that just HAD to play Thor, who was the most powerful member in the group by far, turned out to be TERRIBLE at the game. He never once made one of his combat throws. And on the other hand, my friend who played Wasp - the character nobody wanted - had the best time of all, because much of the adventure was designed specifically for the Wasp. :)

I remember a couple other stories like that. It was partly because the teams were smaller (5- man or 6-man, I think? Depending on the year), and partly because the characters were famous and everyone had a favorite. Unlike TD where "Fighter", "Cleric", "Rogue" were kind of generic titles (and there were more classes to choose from) it seemed like many people in True Heroes really wanted to play just ONE single character, and not any other option.

The thing about paying "real money" is amusing tho :)

I'm pretty sure you mean "embossed" where you say "embroidered."

I've got bags from that era, and some have the leatherette finish pressed down into a TD logo, which was (originally) highlighted in metallic gold. The gold flaked off very fast, though, to the point that most bags had barely a hint of it left, by the time the event was done.

Does anyone have any info on which bags were from which year? I think Gary and I were the only two that were collecting the old bags :)

I have kept my old bags, but I was never really "collecting" them, so I didn't do anything to keep them mint, or record when&where I got them.

I think you're accurate about the types, tho. I remember a mix of burgundy, silver, and black bags from the first year I bought tokens (probably all with the embossed logo) and I remember the logo staying on the black bags better the next year, when it was printed directly on. Can't remember Burgundy bags with the printed-on logo, though.

I actually did mean embroidered, but now that I look at it more closely I see that it isn't embroidered after all. The lettering isn't raised though, so is imprinted more accurate than embossed?

The silver bags did have metallic gold highlight, and that does seem to come off really easily. The black and burgundy bags on the other hand clearly never had any gold highlight, which makes me think even more that those were the 2003 bags, and maybe the silver bags with the metallic gold highlight were the 2004 bags. :)

Under 2007 there is a glaring absence. I suggest adding the following:

This was the year the legendary player, Darkangel866, began playing. He was smart enough not to look at the medusa, but died to the beholder. Since his resurrection, he has defeated Smoak on Nightmare every time, co-founded the Silver Bullettes Adventuring Party (with Stormie), and generally rocked TD at every incarnation.

I went to look at one of my silver bags, and I see what you mean. It is more "imprinted" than "embossed." On one bag, the imprint is deep enough that you can see the grain of the cloth behind it, giving a vaguely "stitched" look, kinda like embroidery.

I also remember the black bags with the imprinted logo in black (not filled in with metallic of any sort.) It was a near black-on-black effect, where you only saw the logo if you looked at it just right. I don't seem to have kept any of those bags tho.

But know what I do have? A bag from each of the Golden Ticket runs from 2008 on :)
(I think the 2007 GT run used the same bags as the regular runs did.)
