TOPIC: GenCon 2021?

GenCon 2021? 1 year 6 months ago #61

I basically put on my survey that if it’s too dangerous to not were mask then it’s going to be a supper spreader event.

I’m interested in seeing how things go here in Texas. I don’t know what my job will require. It’s going to be interesting. I’m sure we will lock down again if things start getting bad.

It blows my mind that Texas had 8k new reported cases yesterday and they still choose to remove the mask mandate and open businesses as normal.

This is sort of like an experiment. If cases in Texas continue to stay flat or don't increase dramatically, that will give states like Indiana evidence and more comfort that they can also reopen. But if they see a dramatic surge, that is going to make people more nervous about reopening and put Gen Con more at risk. We'll probably need to wait 4-6 weeks to see how this plays out. The other thing here is that if Texas does see a surge, then it also becomes a breeding ground for new variants that put everyone at risk.

My favorite (not my favorite, I hate it) factoid is that the home page of the Houston Chronicle looked like this 24 hours before Abbott announced no restrictions. I'm not predicting good things and got pushy about using my 1B status and got my first vaccination this afternoon-my original plan was to wait a bit longer to let frontline workers get theirs easier.

On the one hand I'm happy Texas is opening up, I feel like that is the morally right thing to do. On the other hand though, I doubt people will be responsible about it with spring break coming up and I feel like the backlash to that could delay things stay closed longer. Then again I've been wrong many times before so what do I know, I'm just a leaf who worries to much.

Well crap, I thought my “go vote” was too political.

Stay safe my gamers.

You have no idea how often I type something out give it a second look, decide it’s better not to post and just hit cancel.

I really want to keep my hobbies and politics separate as possible.

I've gotten into political debates here on the forum, but I tried to stop doing that. I am extremely political on my FB and Twitter pages, but I keep it out of my gaming groups (mostly) and my Instagram, which is 99% pictures of my board games.

I certainly don't think "go vote" is too political!

I think Texas and Mississippi are opening up way too soon, but I really hope I am wrong. If I am wrong, that would be really good news for Gencon!

I don't know if many on here know who Herm Edwards is (he is now the coach of football at ASU)
he use to be on espn sports talk shows. He was constantly saying"if you are mad or heated about something, do not hit reply. Type it up in a word doc(write it on paper), then walk away, come back 12hrs to a day later and look at it. Do you still feel the same if no delete it. if yes ask someone you respect if you should post it.

I just don't know.
I know its been said all vaccinated by May, but I don't see the math bearing that out. My state gets 180K doses per week, and just lowered the eligible age and added high risk folks. But they said thats an additional 2.2 million people. At 180K per week, thats basically May. I know more are coming online, but I guess I am more pessimistic. I think it will be late July to August before I could get one.
Also I live in a border community and my GP is in the neighboring state. They don't allow cross-state vaccinations yet, and knowing how I react to needles, I really want my MD nearby. After my last jab, I passed out so hard, that after I woke up, the RN said that she had never seen anyone sweat that much. I was drenched, and they called my wife to drive me home. Yeah, thats just me, but ergo my hesitancy.

Also, most of my friends are planning on skipping GC if it happens and my wife is an absolute no. She has always been introverted, and it took me a decade to get her out of her shell. Since then we have gone to conventions, and tons of concerts. Now she said that she doubts she will ever go back. Its going to take a good chunk of time to unlearn what we have learned over the last 12 months. Small local conventions this fall or winter? Yeah, I think I could do that. Big multinational conventions this summer? Hmmm.

Technically, I think its been said that there will be vaccines available for all adults by the END of May. You still have two remaining issues. One, you have to get those shots into the arms of those adults. That could easily take another month or two. And then you have to convince those who don't want a vaccine to get one. For those reasons, I still see summer cons as a potential issue. But then again, maybe not.

However, I do believe many states will reduce or eliminate mandates by summer. It will then come down to whether or not the event will believe it is safe for them, their vendors and their attendees. The other issue is international attendees. Other countries will not be as far along as the US. Will they be allowed to attend? This is probably not an issue for smaller cons, but I do think Gen Con had a fair number of international attendees.

Internationally, I saw the Summer Olympics announced no international fans would be allowed at events.
It makes you wonder.
