This is my first time at GHC as well. Is the Holiday Inn a reasonable walking distance (when carrying tokens) to the convention center? If not - how do people get from A to B there? Shuttles? Rental cars?

My second year I walked from the Comfort Inn each day (which is about 2 hotels down from the Holiday Inn). It's about half a mile perhaps. Essentially down a little side street and then across a major thoroughfare.

It's about a 10-15 minute walk since you have to cross at a single crossing across a major street.

As for parking, it's free and amazing and never an issue if you have a rental car.

I can't say anything about whether the Holiday Inn has a shuttle service.

It's less than a mile from the Holiday Inn to the convention center. So, technically walkable, although tokens make that a little tougher--as can the weather, depending. (It can get cold in Madison in October/November.) The streets are also less pedestrian-friendly than at GenCon, so getting from the Sheraton/Holiday Inn to the con feels more complex than it probably is. For what it's worth, when we stayed at the Holiday Inn a few years ago, we drove over to the convention center parking lot every day, since (a) parking is free at the con and the hotel and (b) we drove from Chicago to Madison, so we had a car. We're at the Sheraton this year and plan to do the same. The Clarion is attached via an enclosed walkway, so that's totally walkable, but the hotels across John Nolen Drive feel like a hike.

I'd be glad to hear from anyone who's actually walked it--maybe the walk isn't as annoying as it seems in my memory.

ETA: Or, what jpotter said. John Nolen Drive is a major road, so crossing it is a bit of a production.

I think there may be free soft drinks, at least like soda.

Stayed at the Holiday Inn 2 years ago. Walkable? Yes. With tokens? If you're up for it. I think I walked it once and decided it seemed longer than it should. Drove every day after that. Parking is super easy.

Love that the Clarion is connected. I don't think it was GHC, but stayed there for another convention and hated that they made you go outside and walk to the far entrance for entry. WI weather in late Oct could be mid 70s one day and 30s with snow the next. Come prepared.

Edit: Early forecast for next Wed/Thursday is high of 67 and low of 49. That would be a little above average, so am hoping that holds.

The walk is definitely doable. I walked it every day my first year. But, the weather may not be pleasant. One GHC was cold rain (worse than snow in my opinion)

Home2Suites is definitely walkable. You're on the same side of John Nolan, so it's a much easier walk.

Fyi - some rooms opened up at the clarion and we grabbed them. A few more are available if anyone needs them.

If you are at the Holiday Inn Express or even the Sheraton -- stick to the sidewalks! There is no shortcut to Aliant. You will find yourself cut-off by fences and ditches, or knee deep in muck.
