Love A&A and Carcassonne. Haven't tried Puerto Rico, but all I have read is positive. I also like Runebound--its kinda like an RPG boardgame for lazy people. But the best boardgame of all is Settlers of Catan, especially when played with the Cities and Knights expansion!

Settlers is great, but my personal favorite is probably Betrayal at House on the Hill...

Is that the newer one from Avalon Hill? It looked interesting too. I like games where rooms are revealed as you explore.

The nice thing about Settlers is that "non-gamers" tend to like it.

I think you should be able to burn other people's cities and villages in settlers.

Settlers is too much based on the set-up...now in San Juan - you can start out with a strategy and depending on the luck of the cards switch strategy half way through the game...

Carcassonne is also luck of the draw and some strategy based on the placement of the opponents pieces...

Of the two they both rank as my top box-games at the moment...Axis and Allies is old school fun - but unless you are playing alternate rules, playing blind or using some other alternate way of playing it is pretty much a set strategy.

Yes, Axis & Allies is like playing chess--there are standard "opening moves". However, I have not played the newest edition that has the rules tweaked, so I don't know how much that affected play. Supposedly the rules now make the "infantry push mechanic" obsolete.

Yes, that's the new one from Avalon Hill - and it's a TON of fun. After playing it a few times almost everyone I know has bought it.

I, too, like the aspect of having things revealed as you go...

A long time ago I found a booklet of alternate rules (this is what I was referring to - not official tweeks). Also over the years of playing and going to CONS I have seen people playing it blind (neither side sees what the other side has or where it is - if you have the extra person to "referee" the game it is fun as you can take standard moves and then make new risky moves that could reward you big time...
