TOPIC: El Cheapo Token Holder for Dungeon

El Cheapo Token Holder for Dungeon 8 years 9 months ago #1

I kludged together a pretty decent means of having conditional tokens at the ready in the dungeon for DM inspection, which I thought I would share.

The goals of this project were to have a in-dungeon token management system that:
  • Must be hands free (like the cool bandoleers some people have)
  • Must securely hold tokens
  • Must be affordable (< $10 per unit), and require no real skill to assemble

This system is not for consumables, weapons, or anything else where you'll need to actually get your hands on the token, hand it between people, etc.

What I ended up doing was using some coin sheets you can buy from Kirk (or elsewhere presumably), and attaching them to a neck lanyard. I spell out some details below, here is how it looks while being worn:

Assembly Instructions:
  1. Get some plastic coin holder pages, 41 mm coin size should be sufficient. I use these ones from Kirk's store, as they have a clever sleeve within a sleeve design that makes it basically impossible for a token to pop out (an entire page length sleeve would have to slide out of a page deep pocket).

  2. Get a cheap neck lanyard from Amazon, I used these ones which were $14 for a five pack. For some extra security, I like these kinds that have both a metal snap, and also a cloth loop. You can feed the loop through a second hole in the token holding sheet and anchor it back into the metal snap to spread the load:

  3. Smoke 'em if you've got 'em - cause you're done.

I will admit that this contraption is a bit uncomfortable to wear - the pull on the neck is a bit stronger than is desirable. If you have a collared shirt it would help. maybe there is some way to anchor the lanyard into the shoulder strap of a cross body bag.

Anyway - for me this is a big improvement for things that might need to be shown like Ioun Stone Faceted Amber or Pouch of Tulz.

I will still carry consumables like healing and scrolls in pockets.

I keep the tokens that end up in the party card in a separate sheet which just gets put away once the party card is filled out.

Very nice and inexpensive low tech solutions. I concur the Token sheets are the way to go for keeping your builds together. I will be using them this year.

Since you wanted a low cost solution I am going to offer my Magnetic Arm bands for a one time $10.00 price. You must pay for them before GenCon for delivery at Gen Con. This will help me determine how many I really need to bring. If you don't pre-order then the price will go up to $20.00 at Gen Con.

I like cheap.
My criteria were a little different. I need to carry two builds: Shelly's and mine. And I'm willing to sacrifice the hands-free aspect. Not at all a fan of backpacks.

We have a local thrift store that sometimes runs 50% off sales, where I bought an incomplete Rummicube set ($1.50) and an empty wooden box (12x12x1 inches, used for carrying markers or small paint tubes) for $0.75. The clasps were broken so I spent like $3.50 at Hobby Lobby getting new ones.

Cut some scrap foam core or cardboard to fit, and wrapped clear contact paper around them, sticky side out. Cut another scrap of foam core, slightly smaller, to fit between them in case the tokens shake loose. That way the two builds don't mix together, but that's a step I think I could omit. The tokens stick great and I've never had one come loose. But I'm thinking of printing the set bonuses rules on it, because I can never remember them all.

They both have handles, like a small briefcase, and there's room for a few emergency tokens, like PoDD, but certainly not enough for all consumables. That's where arm bands or pockets full of token tubes come into play.

You could do the same thing with an old backgammon set, or anything like a skinny briefcase.

I'll try to remember to post pics later. Some of you saw the first one at WYC.

@Matt. Cool Stuff! Can I make some recommendations for an alternate build..

A) Reuse a laptop bag shoulder strap, instead of a lanyard.

B ) Add a second coin page to the back-to-back with the first, so the binder holes line up, and duct tape them together around the edges.

C) Connect the shoulder strap to each end of the coin page

Why:
1) To shift weight from neck to shoulder

2) Reduce having the coin sheet hanging in front of you while bending over a dungeon puzzle.

3) Add strength to the weakest point, the binder holes. Having two anchor points distributes the load. Having a second sheet also helps with this.

Down side:
• More work

You've probably got a free shoulder strap, if you have a laptop bag you're not using during GenGon, or some carryon luggage have a removable strap.

Matthew, iPhones are very handy devices, but they suck at holding tokens and they are hardly what one would call "cheap".

+1 Vote regarding usefulness. Now only if i didn't loose mine during the offseason...
We're all the kind of people who enjoy the game on a "meta" level. We like talking about the game year-round. We buy tokens. We enjoy crafting. We get together during the off-season if we can. We are a very skewed demographic that way. -Raven
