TOPIC: Nightshade's +2 Short Sword for Trade

Re: Nightshade's +2 Short Sword for Trade 17 years 4 months ago #25

Well if they are equally skilled then yes you would give the advantage to the LS wielding fellow. But that is represented by the LS having 1d8 damage and the SS with 1d6. So it does follow suit but there is always that chance that the opponent makes a critical mistake or you make a very precise hit and turn the tide.

Ummm, I wasn't actually talking about game mechanics though it would also hold true. I was actually referencing what I thought you were referring to, that it takes less skill to wield a shorter weapon than the longer one in practical terms as far as swords go. I disagree. Afterall, a polearm is probably the easiest thing int he world to gain proficiency with. Poke people with the pointy end. Try to keep them from getting past the point.

it has no mention of a size difference requirement...which was always the rule in the past, but even so...

Was this a rule in the past? I know that Rangers generally do use LS/SS but this was because of damage maxing. I looked at some of my older guides and couldn't find any mention of it.

Thought so...not 100% sure, this is not a class I play! That (and this long debate) is why we need a RULE GOD.

I thought it was a rule too. I've never played the ranger and it might have just been a classic trope that got in the way. I always think of the LS/SS combo since 2nd ed was my bread and butter

Well in an actual sense it is easier to use a short sword than a longsword because of its size. On the same note if a person develops an equal skill with a longsword (which will take longer to learn because of the size) then yes the longsword wielder will have a considerable advantage.

If you take 2 complete amateurs and give one a long sword and one a shortsword I would give the advantage to the one with the shortsword because it would be much easier to control.

Control? It's not like these are 50 pound mallets. Control isn't nearly as much of an issue with two neophytes. Reach however is. It's like saying that a sword vs a dagger would go to the dagger because you have ultimate control over the weapon. Not going to do you a lot of good though if the other person can stab you when you're still 3' out of range for a counterstroke.

Well a dagger would be much easier to control this is true but the extreme size difference would make that incomparable.

OK so the RULE GODs have spoken...

The Primary hand MAY have a heavy weapon in it - or it MAY have a weapon usable by the Off hand.

The OFF hand MAY only have a Light weapon.

SO FOR EXAMPLE - the Primary hand can have a Short Sword, and the Off hand a Short Sword.

Weapons that qualify as Primary hand only...(not sure this will be 100%...check me)

PRIMARY ONLY
Long Sword
Scimitar
Heavy Mace
Battle Axe
Spear

OFF HAND
Short Sword
Dagger
Hand Axe
Back to Mike's question... I have a new Long Sword +2 that could be up for trade for Nightshade. Still available?

Hi Indy,

Thanks for the attempt to get the thread back on topic. The Nightshade's +2 Short Sword is still available, but I don't think at this point I'd trade it straight up for a +2 Longsword since I traded more than that to get it. I'm hoping to find a Thief or Ranger (or whomever) that can really use it and will do a trade involving a Horn of Plenty, Dragonscale Armor, Girdle of Hill Giant Strength, or Gearon's +2 Mace, or (throwing this in for you =D) Ring of Regeneration ;/

I've got a nibble for a Horn of Plenty, but if that or no other trades come through, I might get back to you on that +2 Longsword.

Thanks!
Mike

Looks like the horn is the big winner of the price guide shift. Almost everything popped up a bit except for the ulti-crap.
