Because a crit hit with the broadsword does the equivalent of up to 3x damage*. That's so far beyond what anything else provides, it should have been obvious it'd be yoinked just like we don't let people do the quivering palm for one-shots. I can only assume you forgot the quivering palm since the whole 'no precedent' thing falls apart when you consider it. You'll notice it's not on the list either. You're also dead wrong about the non-weapon items too. The Amulet of Thorns was excluded from last year's True Arena for also obvious reasons. Just as I'm sure the Cloak of Curses won't be allowed in this year.

* Just in case someone couldn't quite get that:

1x the damage from the original hit
2x the damage from the critical hit
3x the gain of getting 8 points of life

the quivering palm is a special monk item. it uses the bracer slot, not the weapon slot, and can only be used as a weapon by monks. you can see that the +1 bracer of the dragonfist is not on the list of usable items for the same reason (and obviously not excluded for power reasons). the amulet of thorns and the cloak of curses both refer to a monster that attacks the wearer...gladiators are not monsters.

as for the keen scimitar having power reduced; it is only reduced in power in the same way that every weapon is reduced in power. when you crit, you get a bonus slide, nothing gets auto double damage, the keen scimitar still gives that bonus slide on a 19 or 20 instead of just 20. the real nerf to the keen scimitar last year was that the board used didnt have the 19 area anywhere near the 20.

i do think it seems fair to require the bonus slide of 20 to get the heal (fair=not too nerfed, not too powerful). after all, it is the bonus slide that determines what your extra crit damage is. and i think it should do the bonus damage on the second 20, this makes it such that damage will always be greater than the healing, so total stalemate will be impossible.

In the past, class restrictions have never applied to gladiators for choice of weapon. Bracers have never been restricted specificly in past years.

Ruling has been made and Douglas sent me the updated copy of the rules which I've just emailed out for printing.

Here is the updated section:

Token Selection
A total of 5 tokens from the approved list may be used of “non-consumable” Fighter appropriate tokens of the following types are allowed:

Notes on token function variations inside True Arena:
· Ring of Regeneration; Negates first point of damage taken each combat.
· Gloves of Dexterity; +1 to AC, +1 to initiative.
· Cloak of Displacement; Works only against first attack that would normally hit. The opponent then rolls a d20, and a result of 11-20 means that the attack fails.)
· Nightshade’s +2 Short Sword; If the attack hits and does “dagger” damage, treat this as an “8”.
· +2 Holy Great Sword; Gladiators are neutral therefore there is no +3 effect.
· +2 Keen Scimitar; Allows a bonus slide on a natural 19 or 20.
· +1 Broadsword of Life Stealing – On a natural slide of 20, the player must decide if the bonus slide is going to be for extra damage or Life Stealing. If the player elects to slide for Life Stealing, then a natural 20 will heal the player 6 HPs. This slide has no other effect. Note: On a Life Stealing slide, criticals have no effect and only one bonus slide is allowed.
· +2 Mace of Dispelling; All Gladiators are neutral therefore there is no dispelling effect.

Whether your opponent really is an undead does not factor into the event, while playing they are a gladiator. You will have to wait till the event is over to Smite them.

And remember no smiting the smelly undead near or in the tavern with Febreeze. That is black magic that should not be used around fair pixies.
Please take them outside before unleashing that ominous cloud of black magic to banish them.
