TOPIC: Token Case

Token Case 10 years 8 months ago #1

To the more 'intense' token collectors,
I have just started being serious with my collection, and am looking for advice about a sturdy case to carry them in.

What are you using at home and for travel?

Poker chip cases work great. They are designed to hold heavy weight tokens if you get the good ones.

There are also people that like to use the plastic cases with the movable separators. Can't remember the brand name of the ones people like.
You can't fix stupid but you can TPK it.

Plano cases are fairly cheap. Usually you can get one for fishing which has multiple compartments.

Just be aware that plastic cases, some of the cheaper poker chips, and even some rollable luggage may not be able to bear the full weight of too many tokens! There's a story about the token that broke the camel's back! :P

A sturdy poker chip case with wheels has worked great for me. Tokens are heavy - it's so much easier to roll them around instead of only carrying them.
I make chainmail! Check out www.ArcadianChain.com for chainmail jewelry and accessories, including token holders, dice bags, and d20 keychains.

I use a Shimano brand of fishing lure holders. It is plastic trays that fit into a Shimano brand bag. It works well but as Adeya says tokens are heavy. We weighed the bag after GenCon one year will all the pulls in it and it topped 50lbs. It usually doesn't way that much, but still it is a heavy bastard. I warned volunteers when it is bag checked.

Gonna have to check out Shimano - Over the years - Plano (in general) has been hit & miss with me. Thx for that! :)

For basic transport, Jen & I use plastic poker chip cases. (Small ones) with 4 rows of about... 16-18? chips each... We put a rubber band around the outside just to help the lid. They have worked very well for both transport and for carrying into dungeon.

This link is similar if not the same as what we use right now.

They say that the best weapon is the one you never have to use. I respectfully disagree. I prefer the weapon you only have to use once! Oh - and if you really need to think about whether you're going to use the fireball or the + umpty staff of butt-whooping - you're likely to find yourself full of arrows, or fangs, or nasty knives & swords and such. Don't think - just shoot!

This year I used a Plano fabric case holding 5 Plano plastic cases. This meant I could carry over 550 tokens (90 different sections for categorizing them). Note - that would be very heavy. Plus the case includes extra pockets on the sides.

If you wanted good visual and organization I would say that was the best bang for the buck. I have always like the poker chip case idea but been unhappy with having to dig through stacks to find the item I am looking for.

Since my needs have now changed (hauling more tokens) if anyone is interested in my Plano holder please send me a PM with your email and I can shoot you some pictures.

The larger of the bags pictured here is what I use. Unfortunately it appears Shimano doesn't make the plastic trays I use anymore, but apparently the Plano do fit in them well according to the website. The bag I have holds 6 trays in the main compartment and can fit 2 in the front (though I only put one there as that is also were I put my Whitman Coin Wallets (they fit in built in elastic traps).

I used plastic chip boxes very similar to these this year, except they fit 24 tokens in each row.

I ran a piece of duct tape across the top plastic with little tabs that help when you are pulling it off. Rubber rand probably would have worked just as well, but I at least feel like the duct tape adds some strength to the top of the box.

Second above regarding non pokerchip trays/bags. I use flambeau trays with infinity dividers which are trays with thousands of notches to fit dividers anyway you need them. I put the trays into my Columbia hiking bag. I think I was getting either growled at or sighed upon at bag check. I kept warning the staff that my bag was a lot heavier than it looked (especially since that bag kept getting more tokens after every run :)

Flambeau overall makes a lot of good stuff and their outlet store is real good based in NE Ohio. Not the first/second/X time i've called in for misc to hold random game.
We're all the kind of people who enjoy the game on a "meta" level. We like talking about the game year-round. We buy tokens. We enjoy crafting. We get together during the off-season if we can. We are a very skewed demographic that way. -Raven
