TOPIC: Flaming Short Bow or Frost Short Bow? Which one?

Flaming Short Bow or Frost Short Bow? Which one? 14 years 9 months ago #1

In combat with Smoak, I'll be shooting a little shortbow, and I'm trying to decide which would be the better option: the Flaming Short Bow or the Frost Short Bow?

+2 Flaming Short Bow: 5,5,7,7,10,10
Frost Short Bow: 3,3,5,5,8,8

What is tripping me up is the fire vs frost. I'm not quite sure how the different effects work, and how Smoak reacts to fire damage. Does Cold gets doubled? Fire cut in half? Which way should I go?

I am sure he has fire resistance (deduction whatever it is called) So fire damage will be less on smoak.
I would not put it past jeff to have some sort of cold thing to fight before we get to smoak..that would be a dirty trick

i would go with the frost

The Frost will do more damage in this case, but the Flaming has a +2 to Hit that the Frost doesn't have. I'm guessing that Smoak's AC will be very high, so I'd think the +2 to hit might outweigh the bonus damage, since bonus damage doesn't count for much if you can't hit.

I'm curious to know how much of the damage from the Frost Short Bow is cold damage... I know that the Token guide says that TWO of the points from the +2 Flaming Short Bow is fire damage... and that monsters resistant to fire damage take two less damage from that weapon... but is that two points because of the +2? Or is that coincidence? Same question for the UR crossbow...

Compare the +2 Flaming Short Bow to a regular short bow. You will notice all of the numbers on the damage wheel are 4 higher. 2 come from the +2 and the other 2 come from the fire damage being added in.

So... A Fire Weapon against a creature with Fire Resistance would work just like the monster is wearing a Ring of Fire Resistance, (Fire damage would be half) correct?

The +2 Flaming Short Bow would then be: 4,4,6,6,9,9?

And a Cold Weapon against a creature with Frost Vulnerability would do what? Double the Frost Damage?

It won't do double damage(unless it is a crit). It will do regular damage...all of it.

I wouldn't be surprised if it does bonus damage because of the Frost. I would think that all cold/frost damage would have bonus damage, and most/all fire damage would be prevented.

That's exactly what I'm wondering. What exactly happens with Frost/Fire damage...

I think against Smoak one could safely assume none of the fire damage would count, so the +2FSB would be 3,3,5,5,8,8. So, while the damage wheel becomes the same as that for the FrSB, it still retains the +2 to hit (as was noted above.) And with all the magic arrows out there, it's easy enough to put extra damage back into the mix (e.g. use the +2FSB with an Arrow of Frost). Unless I knew for sure the FrSB would cause extra damage, I'd go with the +2FSB (or the +1 Mighty Shortbow).

Both. +2 Flaming Shortbow until you reach Smoak, Frost Shortbow for Smoak or any other fire type monsters.
when I play D&D if fighting a fire elemental..he has fire reduction...all cold damage is done no deductions.
That is what i am going off of.
