TOPIC: Useless token info and puzzle ideas

Useless token info and puzzle ideas 14 years 9 months ago #1

I am the only person I know that loves to look through office and business supply catalogs. I like to see what companies provide to other companies. Taking part in True Dungeon, I have always wondered about the different materials used like the combat boards, the plastic lettering tiles (magnetic and non-magnetic), different props, and most of all the tokens.

I first came into True dungeon in 2007 so I missed the transition from the wooden nickel tokens to the current variety. Who makes them, what exactly are they made of, how large of an order does a company need to place, what types of machines are used to manufacture the tokens, where is the company located, who else have they provided materials, etc. To the average person, like me, having the answers to any of these questions makes no difference. But having the questions does. It prompts investigations and searching such as it has throughout human history. The search for answers. What would I do with the answers? File them away in the useless trivia section in my head of course! (By the way, I love trivial pursuit. I’m horrible at it, but I love it.)

Things I have found out about treasure tokens. (Just from my research, could be wrong, could be right):

• Composite consisting of metal weight (slug) surrounded by a plastic (ABS?) coating
 •
• Made through an injection molding process.
 •
• Measurements: Diam. = 40mm, Height = 3 mm, “Border” = 2 mm.
 •
• Weight = 10-15 grams
 •
• 1 embossed side, 1 inlay side
 •
• Sticker is card stock-like material
 •
• 1 injection point
 •
• 12 mold points, air holes? (Has something to do with the injection process where the liquid materials meet)
 •
• Manufacture located west of Chicago.
 •

So while looking around the web for anything that even closely resembles a True Dungeon treasure token, I found loads of information on the different types of tokens and chips that can be made. Staggering is probably the best description of the choices offered. Then I read about custom casino chips. Some use computer chips, UV ink, holograms, and other exotic additions to their chips to help prevent counterfeiting and forgery. Now this really got me thinking about the application of similar things to True Dungeon.

While computer chips implanted in the treasure tokens would be beyond reasonable, many other things are possible with the existing tokens that hasn’t even been taken into consideration that I know of. Things such as:

• A magnetic puzzle! Since the internal weight of the tokens is metal, moving a token around behind a screen with a decent strength magnet becomes possible. Also, with the weight, a scale type puzzle could be presented. Maybe even combine these where you would have to use magnets to move tokens from behind a screen onto the correct scales to get proper numbers to open a safe in a room!
 •
• UV ink written on some coins that when viewed using “lowlight vision” or “moon light” (ultra violet light), new clues become visible.
 •
• A plinko type puzzle where tokens would become placed in a set of gears that has to be rotated to the correct position to open a door or deliver an item to someone somewhere else.
 •

Mind = blown with all the possibilities that the current tokens can generate. While using them for gear, weapons, spells, and currency is awesome, imagine what more can be done. Tokens are the most tangible part of true dungeon now and could be even more in the future.

And now I have to wait an entire year for another True Dungeon so I can play with my tokens. Can't someone speed up time?!

TLDR: Useless info on tokens and some uncharted token based puzzle ideas.

Silly person, you can play with tokens year 'round!

BTW, love the plinko idea - hope it becomes a reality!

If not in the dungeon, I can see having a plinko board in the tavern (assuming it returns next year).

actually, a lot of darkhilt's suggestions could make for interesting tavern games if they were not used in the dungeon. This might help us preserve illusion of tokens as something other in the dungeon (ie its not a token, its a sword) ... but in the tavern we do not need to maintain that illusion and could come up with various games and challenges using the tokens.
I would love to do some kind of TD Fantasy Casino some day, but Indiana law won't allow it. You can do carnival games that require an element of skill, so that is what we could do. I often let my mind wander at Chuck E. Cheese since it is filled with games of skill -- and you use tokens when playing. Perhaps someday we will have a carnival type set up in the Tavern where tokens can be used to get wooden nickels that can be turned in for TD prizes. I think it could be a lot of fun.

Feedback?

I think that would be a neat idea, and puzzles like that in a dungeon room would be sweet myabe have like 4 in the room so two people per trap and you have to move the token into the right area or something to open a door or something along those lines would be sweet.

Remember the carnaval game with scores of goldfish, each in individual goldfish bowls? For a fee (10 cents back in the day) you could throw a pingpong ball to win a fish.
A game such as that with tokens to win instead would be real fun, especially with the right tokens as prizes.

Have someone set up to do the shell game. Other than coconuts, I can't think of any nut shell large enough to hide a token under.

Or how about a dagger throwing booth to pop balloons that contain tokens?

Blindfolded swings at an Ogre pinata stuffed with, guess what.

This year I discovered a new use for some of the True Dungeon tokens. The idea came to be Saturday night but I put it into practice on Sunday. As I was walking through part of the main building near the exhibit hall a gentleman was playing some music and he had a basket out in front of him. I reached into my pocket for some spare change and found a True Dungeon monetary token (it was something worth about 5 gold pieces). So, I tossed it into his basket. He smiled at me, nodded his head in thanks, and kept on playing. It felt good knowing that I contributed a little bit of wealth for his efforts.

Take care and have a great day....

ciao,
john.

PS I also tipped him some actual money.
PPS I also found out that if you roll True Dungeon tokens down the various hallways that some people will actually run after them! It is really quite entertaining to watch.

How about a variation of Henwy's token box where you could donate a token and draw a token? One possibility would be to have some bottles set up where you could try to toss the tokens into the bottles and if you succeed you would then get to draw from a treasure box.

Another possibility would be a really long (as in double or triple length) sliding board with a series of small targets at the far end. People could slide their tokens (without the pucks, of course) and depending on the target they land on they would get a draw of one, two, or possibly three from a treasure box.

That token sliding board sounds neat, but I know they would use that greased glass board they used for Smoak this year and tokens would go zipping all over the place.

And would that stop you from having a go at it? Heck, would it stop anyone from having a go at it? I know that I would gladly slide on a super slicked, extra long board and "throw away" some useless tokens for a slim chance of getting a treasure draw and an even slimmer chance of getting a better token, possibly even a purple.

"Blindfolded swings at an Ogre pinata stuffed with, guess what."

I helped move the pallet of Smoak's treasure. I REALLY don't want to swing at a pinata stuffed with tokens.

Take a swing, roll for damage.
