TOPIC: Best Wizard Layout for 5th Level

Best Wizard Layout for 5th Level 13 years 11 months ago #1

Alright so I'm doing some planning for next year (or if I somehow get lucky with draws at the Treasure Map box). I was wondering what is the best Wizard layout for attaining 5th level, while still being able to use the +2 Staff of Power/Dagger of Arcane Luck and the Circlet of Elemental Mastery?

Or perhaps you recommend changing around gear to make this work? IE Staff in Beginning of room for awareness, then switch over to Scepter of Might/Dagger?

Thanks!

Just so you know, to utilize the magic conferred by a set bonus, you must wear/equip all the items in the set for the entire adventure. The only exception to this rule is if you are wielding a melee item and need to fire a ranged weapon.

from the DMG

a character may temporarily swap one or both held-held items for a ranged (not melee) weapon and maintain the set bonus. However, any bonuses specifically granted by the abandoned item(s) no longer apply. E.g., if a character is using both the Dragonscale Shield and Scepter of Might, that character can swap them both out to use a ranged weapon if needed. The same would hold true if the character were wielding the Orb and Scepter of Might. Otherwise, all the items in the set must be worn for the entire dungeon.

You can't use the Dagger of Arcane Luck if you have the +2 Staff of Power equipped. You can switch between them, but the Wizard should probably be casting spells rather than sliding weapon pucks.

Since you want to keep your hands free for the +2 SoP, the only way you can attain 5th with the Might set is with the Boots, Crown, and Girdle.

And unfortunately, if you use the Crown, you can't use the Circlet of Elemental Mastery. The wizard has to give up a lot to use a Might Trio.

Don't envy the coaches who need to check this gear. Or maybe I do...I cannot decide.

The biggest question is:

Do you give up your hands or your head?

Obviously the Boots and Girdle will be used by the Wizard. Both are pretty much no brainers.

The other options are not so obvious. If you wear the Crown, you gain only 5th level, no other benefit. You lose the ability to change energy types (with the Circlet).

The Orb is not very beneficial, but there is no other off handed weapon.

The Scepter is fully usable by the Wizards, but they should still be casting spells.

Both of these options remove the Staff of Power. This removes either Alertness every room, or Magic Missile, or Detect/Read Magic.

Overall, it is strictly a preference, but this year I will be having my Wizard use the Staff of Power.

Trading elemental mastery for an extra ray of frost and a 30point lightning bolt seems like a good idea. Not to mention the extra HP- going up by 5 points is a lot for the wizard (33% more)

I agree 100%! I've been playing the Wizard in my group since our first run in 2006. We've built up our "Might" set over the last several years and have the Crown of Might, Orb of Might and Boots of Might. I'm having our Fighter use the set against the Dragon, I'm using it in True Grind for the extra spells and lightning bolt vs. multiple opponents and our Cleric is going to use it against the Sea Lich (have you seen what Searing Light can do for a 5th Level Cleric, especially vs. undead?)

Wizards are spellcasters and have to consistently do damage in each combat (because the other players will inevitably have poor slides!) and use the big spells on the "boss" monsters - Scorching Ray and Melf's Acid Arrow (I crit with Melf's Acid Arrow in Round 1 on Smoak last year!). Bracelets of Zephyr is the best tool I have! I cast Scorching Ray and Melf's Acid Arrow in Round 1 on every "boss" monster and put up 34 points of damage in round 1! I am so looking forward to having the lighting bolt and extra ray of frost in True Grind!
