TOPIC: Viper Strike Set Bonus Inquiry

Viper Strike Set Bonus Inquiry 11 years 4 months ago #1

Ok so the way I understand it (according to a post from Jeff a while ago, i THINK);

2 UNIQUE weapons can count toward the set bonus, correct?

Example, if I have the +2 viper strike fang and the +3 fang, and wear the shirt - would that qualify for the bonus?

Or do all of these items need to be equipped simultaneously?

Thanks and sorry if this has/had been addressed or answered elsewhere.

well, both of those might count, but only if you can equip them at the same time. getting a set bonus from a weapon/shield item requires you to always have that item equipped in the appropriate type of combat. and since most classes cant equip both the +2 and +3 version of the weapon, you cant count both.

rangers, however, are just sexy enough to pull it off. in fact, maybe I will wear the belt with 2 viper strike fangs, so I can adventure shirtless.

The Quick Token Reference goes into great detail on set bonuses starting on page 14.
Set Bonuses & Duplicate Weapons
If both the weapons being wielded are part of the same set and are either Relics (five-point star) or Legendaries (orange title and backing), they count as two items toward fulfilling that set's quota. E.g., when trying to qualify for the Viper Strike set bonus, a monk could wield two +3 Viper Strike Fangs (Relics) and wear one other Viper Strike item to qualify for the Viper Strike set bonus. Similarly, a ranger could wield two Asher's +5 Viper Strike Fangs and they would count as two items toward the Viper Strike set. Wielding two +2 Viper Strike Fangs (Ultra Rares) would only count as a single item toward the set's quota because neither of those are Relics or Legendaries. A character capable of wielding two weapons may wield two weapons with the same name regardless of rarity, but they only count as two items toward fulfilling a set bonus if both are either Relics or Legendaries. Putting it another way, wielding two same-named Common, Uncommon, Rare, Ultra Rare, Enhanced, or Exalted weapons only count as a single item toward qualifying for a set bonus, but wielding two same-named Relic or Legendary weapons counts as two items toward the set.

Different-named set-piece weapons count as two items toward the set's quota, regardless of rarity.
Viper Strike Set
When at least three items are equipped, all characters gain +2 To Hit on all attack slides (including spells.) In addition to the To Hit bonus, monks and rogues gain an additional benefit:
Monks: If their Viper Strike weapon critically hits, it deals +5 Poison damage—which will get doubled to 10 because it's a critical hit. (If you prefer to think of this as +10 Poison damage which is not doubled, that's fine.)
Rogues: When making a sneak attack with a Viper Strike weapon, the bonus damage from the sneak attack (+15 if the rogue is 4th level or +20 if the rogue is 5th level) is doubled if a critical hit is scored. Under normal circumstances, only the non-bonus damage from a sneak attack is doubled on a crit.
  • Asher's +5 Viper Strike Fang
  • +2 Viper Strike Fang
  • +3 Viper Strike Fang
  • Viper Strike Belt
  • Viper Strike Shirt
There is no additional set bonus for equipping more than three Viper Strike items.

As I understand it, that is correct. Two different variations of the weapon and the shirt will get you the set bonus.

I assume there will be more Viper items in the future. The bonus gives +2 to hit for spells, but wizards cannot get the set bonus b/c they can only wear the shirt and belt. Do clerics or druids have any sliding spells - I'm not remembering any for them.

Though I don't know what Jeff has planned in the future, I would be surprised if additional caster-centric Viper Strike items were made for the same reason I don't think he will add Cabal items focusing on melee characters.

Cabal is a little different thought given its a synergy set. Expanding it to include melee types would have a lot more implications then adding on to an individual set like viper strike or might.

Granted, it wasn't a perfect analogy. My point was that those sets were designed around a specific group of classes and expanding the set items to include classes outside of their respective groups would be, in my opinion, unexpected.

I agree - I don't expect the Viper Strike set to be expanded. Just making note of the fact that the set gives +2 to hit, specifically mentioning that spells are included, even though no spellcasters can use the set (I checked the Token DB, and spellcasters can use only the shirt and belt, not any of the Viper weapons).

I am wondering if any of the Prestige classes will have a spell or two added to their card :)

One might be led to believe you did. ;)
