If I purchase a set of tokens from the store right now and I get a free section of the Rod of Seven Parts, which part do I get? Is it random, or do I always get the 7th part now?

Likewise, if I'm unable to collect all the parts and convert to the full rod, is there any limit to how many parts I can equip? For example, let's say I have 6 parts, can I just equip them indefinitely in the future since they are slotless?
