Resulting from a discussion with Jeff, the definition of Retribution Damage has been better defined. Functionally, Retribution Damage will be the same, but we think this more clearly illustrates what it is, when it occurs, and when it does not come into play.

Retribution Damage (RD): When an item or spell with RD is equipped/active, any time the wearer takes damage from a melee attack, the RD will be inflicted upon the attacker. Neither ranged nor spell attacks will trigger RD. If the attack would have caused damage but is negated (e.g., Cloak of Shadowskin ) or the damage is reduced to zero (e.g., melee damage reduction ), it will not trigger RD.

Makes sense. No damage no trigger of retribution damage.

Druegar, is the RD always caused by an item or a spell? Don't some monsters have built-in RD? The description sounds like the only sources of RD are items and spells.

I can't think of a situation when a monster has had RD without the aid of magic or an item. But even if you can reference one, the source of the RD is moot; the mechanics are the same. The description was written from the player's perspective--just like the Magical Damage Resolution section of the DMG--to make it more relatable.

Okay, but that doesn't change anything.

Would this version be more satisfactory?
Retribution Damage: When a melee attack deals damage to a target possessing Retribution Damage (RD), the attacker loses Hit Points equal to the target's total RD. Neither ranged nor spell attacks will trigger RD. If an attack would have caused damage but is completely negated (e.g., Cloak of Shadowskin) or the attack's damage is reduced to zero (e.g., melee damage reduction), RD will not be triggered. Multiple sources of RD stack, unless specifically stated otherwise.

Retribution Damage often originates from an item or spell, but it can come from other sources as well.

Change "loses hit points" to "takes damage" unless the intent is it cannot be reduced by SRoEC or Barbarian Damage Reduction or Medallion of Greyhawk etc.
