How does the damage wheel work though? If I need a 15 to hit and I slide a 15 do I get the lowest number on the weapon and then it goes up from there?

Just curious because if that’s the case then as I add hit I’m technically adding damage as well.

Where your puck lands is the equivalent of your die roll - so, your final to-hit value is your to-hit bonus added to your slid value. In order to hit the monster, that total needs to be higher than the monster's AC.

The damage wheel only comes into play after you hit. On the monster board, there will be a "Targeting Dot" (very small). Whichever part of your damage wheel is pointing to that dot will be your base weapon damage, and then the DM will add your bonus damage to the result.

There is a dot on the table. If your pick slides a hit, the number on the weapon that is in the direction of the dot is the amount of damage you do, plus relevant bonuses.

The PHB has a great visual of a monster to better explain this.

I pulled this info out of it:
Stats to have:
Hardcore difficulty:
Preferred combat mode (melee or ranged) to hit bonus: +8-+18
AC: 22-32
FORT/RFLX/WILL Saves: 10-20

Those stats are waaaay over inflated for hardcore. The high end of those ranges is definitely NM ready.

Thats not always the case it often happens that hardcore and nightmare get toned down from gencon so hence the range.

Here's my rubric: Are you killing monsters in less than 3 rounds? Are you able to skip healing during combat? If the answer is yes to both, then it's too easy.

I'm not sure how many rounds of combat we average. A few years ago we could beat room 1 or 2 monsters in 1-2 rounds of combat. I think most of our combats go to 3 rounds, maybe 4 sometimes. We are definitely able to skip healing during combat sometimes (almost always earlier in the dungeon, sometimes in the middle, not as much near the end).

Raven wrote: Heya,

I’m going to ask you a non-token question before answering whether you are ready:

How do you & your party feel about being killed in the dungeon?

If the answer is: “it ruins our game. We paid $80 to experience the whole dungeon, and if one of us has to sit out a room it absolutely sucks!” Then you probably want to think hard about making sure you have optimal gear for HC.

If your answer is more: “I love the adrenaline rush of knowing how close we came! Only 3 of us survived to the final room, and then it was a TPK, but we all loved it! it was absolutely worth it!!!” Then you are ready. No gear swap-outs necessary.

Myself, I like to run the same dungeon 2 or 3 times, so it doesn’t bother me if I die. I’ll happily play at a level much harder than I should. My current favorite mode is Nightmare Double-Down (5 person run) where we’re geared to pretty decent UR builds with some Relics thrown in, but definitely not BIS legendary builds. We do occasionally die in the dungeon. Then we go out for dinner and talk about how we can do it again more successfully next time!

(FYI, it’s usually the puzzles which kill us, not the monsters. Some puzzles are absolutely brutal with only 5 players)

I would say most of us are ok with dying if we make it to the last room. I think we'd be pretty bummed to die before that. We only do each run once, and some people only do one run with us, so having an overall "good experience" (some challenge, taking some damage, but not dying before the last room) is pretty important.

I s’pose I should add: I don’t think your current builds will have you down to 3 players in that final room - I honestly suspect you’ll do fine in HC. But it’s a risk which can really change the enjoyment level for some folks. I’d hate to advise you to “go for it!” and spoil your only run of the dungeon for the con... or even have half your party disappointed in the experience and saying they don’t feel it’s worth ever trying again.

Maybe - if you can afford it - try to get a second run of a dungeon, and re-play it on HC mode, after everyone has had a chance to see the whole thing on Normal mode.

if you decide to run on normal again, you might try this.

ask the GM's at the end of each room, if time permits, how they think your team would have done on hardcore?

just a thought. it might be something that could help you on a second run this year.
