TOPIC: Nightshade's +2 Short Sword for Trade

Nightshade's +2 Short Sword for Trade 17 years 4 months ago #1

I've just gotten a Nightshade's +2 Short Sword that I'm willing to trade for the right offer. In the hands of a Rogue it is probably the highest average damage weapon there is, and even for a non-Rogue it is almost equivalent to a +2 Longsword, doing an average of 6.33 damage compared to the +2 Longsword's 6.50 average damage. It is especially nice in the off-hand for the Ranger.

I'm most interested in:

Horn of Plenty
Dragonscale Armor
Girdle of Hill Giant Strength
Gearon's +2 Mace
Ring of Regeneration

But I'm willing to hear all offers. =D

Thanks,
Mike

I've got 30 Reds (of my choosing) for you, but I'm sure that's probably not what you're interested in hearing.

JKW

True - I'd much rather keep the Nightshade's +2 Short Sword and have the party use it on the adventure than trade it for 30 lesser Reds.
I've just gotten a Nightshade's +2 Short Sword that I'm willing to trade for the right offer. I would prefer a trade including a Horn of Plenty or Dragonscale Armor, but I'm willing to consider all offers. I won't mind keeping it either, since in the hands of a Rogue it is probably the highest average damage weapon there is, and even for a non-Rogue it is almost equivalent to a +2 Longsword, doing an average of 6.33 damage compared to the +2 Longsword's 6.50 average damage. It is especially nice in the off-hand for the Ranger.

I'm looking forward to hearing offers =D

Thanks,
Mike

yeah, nightshade's short sword is really good. ive ended up with a second one that i would probably only trade for a +2 longsword or a +2 keen scimitar with a little extra...if i dont get one of those two i guess ill be going into the dungeon with dual nightshade's swords since it is better than a +1 long :)
-kent

If you are referring to a Ranger using both...that is not allowed. The Ranger must use a larger weapon in his/her primary hand and a smaller weapon in the off-hand.
They can choose from the following for their right hand: Dagger, Short Sword, Scimitar, Long Sword, Spear, Heavy Mace, Hand Axe, or Battle Axe. And for their left hand: Dagger, Hand Axe, Short Sword.

From the players guide with respect to the ranger. It does not say anything about not being able to use two of the same weapon, is there a ruling somewhere else on this?

Roz

In 2nd ed the big rule was it had to be a size catagory smaller but according to newer rules the off hand has to be a light weapon in order to incur the least penalties regardless of the main hand weapon size.

Page 6 of the Players guide is not very specific, in fact it is confusing...

I believe the rule should read: "A Ranger can use X weapons in his/her primary hand, and then must use a smaller weapon (Y) in his/her off-hand."

So if X = a short sword, then Y = a dagger or hand axe
IF X= a long sword, then Y = a short sword.

Could a RULE GOD please confirm I have it right or wrong and address the Players Guide if needed. Maybe for 2007 the Ranger can use 2 short swords...but I question that as it has not been announced as a change for Player Coaches to be aware of...

As Joe was saying, 2nd ed had rules about off hand weapons being smaller than main hand. In 3rd ed they changed it to off hand being up to a size category smaller than the character and the main hand being up to the same size category as the character for minimal penalty, but there are no restrictions on the exact weapons or combo used as long as the character is proficient with them.

My 3rd ed rogues commonly took a level of ranger so they could duel wield short swords. My Half-elf rogue did over 150 points of damage in one round with a pair of +1 Keen Short Swords one time. =D

Of course TD can tweak the rules however they want from the book versions...

Roz

3rd ed rules aren't applicable. There is no such thing as weapon sizes since a short sword is a short sword is a short sword. I would go with Gary's interpretation at least for how it was in previous years. It would probably be simplier to just say that they can use whatever small weapon they want in either hand rather than compare sizes though. Then again, it would be just as easy a fix as to say they can't use two of the same weapons.

has it ever actually come up before that a player wanted to use two short swords as a ranger and been told they couldnt? if so (and i guess the reason was because of D&D rules), then why wasnt that included in the TD rules anywhere? at least, i cant find anything like that. from the newest players guide, in the section for ranger:
"The ranger is one of the classes with the unique advantage of being able to slide two pucks in melee, one with each hand at the same time during combat. This double attack can quickly turn the tide of battle. They can choose from the following for their right hand: Dagger, short sword, scimitar, long sword, spear, heavy mace, hand axe, or battle axe. And for their left hand: Dagger, hand axe, or short sword."
then it goes on to other abilities. nothing about the left hand weapon being dependant upon what is in your right hand. also, from the token guide under the weapons usability section:
"Ranger: He must always use two weapons in melee. He must choose from below:
right hand: dagger, short sword, scimitar, long sword, spear, heavy mace, hand axe, or battle axe.
left hand: dagger, hand axe, or short sword.
ranged weapons: "...
again, nothing about needing smaller weapon in left hand. in fact, the dagger being listed as an option for right hand use, and the 'must' use two weapons seems to imply that there is no conditional relationship. if someone has a TD rule somewhere that i missed, please point it out. though, i really hope that it doesnt even come up and i get a +2 keen scimitar (or +2 longsword) before gencon, but it would be good to sort this out. if rangers (for TD) are required to have a larger weapon in right hand, it should be stated somewhere.
thanks,
kent
