I sort of agree and disagree. I would like to see harder difficulties in the dungeon like we have in Grind. But also I think sealed pack runs would still be fun.

Probably the biggest problem is that you used to be able to die in the dungeon and I know a lot of people didn't like that. Now it seems pretty hard to die. I literally have never died in the dungeon other than in one of our crazy under-equipped nightmare runs.

I guess some of us like to think we actually might die :)

It's not that we ever want to die but more of the we want a better illusion of chance that we might die. I admit I like variant runs because they amuse me more than straight up playing higher difficulties. I remember my first nightmare run (fill in for a DDA run I think?) and kept wondering aside from higher numbers and less margin for error what was/is the big deal? I get that is a skull session for some of us to do X tier difficulty and to use a lot of the high tier tokens.

These variants feel like more of a different play experience. I get that they're not for everybody. I'd say look at Magic with all the different formats. You have some players that play all and some that specialize/only play 1 format. These runs that are differently organize fulfill that niche for some of us in this game we all enjoy.
We're all the kind of people who enjoy the game on a "meta" level. We like talking about the game year-round. We buy tokens. We enjoy crafting. We get together during the off-season if we can. We are a very skewed demographic that way. -Raven

I am not making that assumption. Even with the year long bender, he still believes he is a human monk. I am posing the scientific question of how much does it take for him to release those limitations on his worldview. For science of course.

I don't think that is true for 90 percent of the people that play. It is those of us that play multiple/multiple runs. Which might be even a lower percent.


I agree that it is likely quite a small percentage of us that are into 'interesting variants'. Of which i would believe that most of the small minority is active on the forums. I'm relatively young to this crowd, this'll be year 5 for me for both Gencon and TD. I did my first variant last year and had a blast (Green with envy). Since I only do a few runs due to likely volunteer commitments I keep an eye out for different/interesting one-offs.


Yeah I think it's people doing lots of runs that are considering variants. I hope to do 8 this year at GC so having 1-2 of those be something different sounds fun. I may try to organize a "red with envy" if there's enough interest and nobody else does. I suppose it's also more of an opportunity for those with lots of tokens to use more of their collection :)

So from what I see, the variant run do in fact come from people who play a lot.
I think the variants would disappear if the ability to play a ton of different dungeons were possible. We have essentially 4 different dungeons plus grind. If it were even possible to double that I suspect the variant runs would dry up.

With TD at 2 more Cons now its possible the variant runs will take a hit as people are provided more opportunities to play different content.


As for the difficulty level, there were 2 issues. There was a group of people wanting a difficulty between normal and nightmare. They got Hardcore. There is also a group of people that want a nightmare + level. They have only gotten the harder stuff in Grind. Nightmare did get a boost in difficulty but I don't think its quite were some folks want it to be.


As to the original post, while yes technically a variant run, I didn't actually see this as such. It was more of a "learn to play a different class" or "break out of your shell" opportunity.

An Ugh run sounds like fun. I would figure that the hardest hit would be spellcasters and bards reducing effectiveness but yes this sounds like a fun plan. I'd be in.
