TOPIC: How much Role-playing is expected?

1st year doing True Dungeon and I'm just curious how much role-playing is expected? Does the bard have to actually sing to activate Bardsong? Thanks in advance.

No role-playing is required, but plenty of people choose to do so. If you play Bard, some DMs might try to get you to sing, but you don't have to.

Welcome to True Dungeon! Groups LOVE having a Bard in the group, so you're in for a good time for sure.

The Players Handbook (found here) on page 13 about Bards says:

"Bard players are highly encouraged to actually do some kind of performance to represent their character’s action. Most bard players sing a song, but playing an instrument (keep it to a reasonable volume, please!), dancing, reciting poetry, or some other form of audible and/or visible performance is acceptable. However, a literal performance by the bard player is not required."

You can do as much or as little as you like. It's like playing a board game but you are the character. No one expects you to act like your character or talk like your character. TD is the only reason I attend gen con and I'm a 60 yr old woman! It's not larping but I've seen some dungeon attendees that go full costume & character! All you need to do is heal or fight/slide as best you can and have fun!!

Welcome, Steve! as others have noted you don't need to roleplay a character to play TD. However, you will be interacting with costumed actors (NPCs) so your group might be called on to roleplay just a little bit.

We're looking forward to it. I have my brother and SIL doing Golden Obelisk with me and not only is it their first TD but their first Gencon, so I'm hoping they have a great time.

We have had DMs absolutely insist that the Bard has to actually sing, but it's been a bit since that happened.

My daughter once sang baby shark as the Bard song, lol, most of the dms said to stop and we'll assume that you're singing 🤣, it was awesome!!
