TOPIC: New player wanting to try VTD Overwhelmed help!

New player wanting to try VTD Overwhelmed help! 8 hours 32 minutes ago #1

Hello! I really want to try out TD, I've been looking at possibly making a huge investment to go to GenCon to try it out but I love the Idea of VTD and want to try it out, I see there is an event this weekend and I was looking at possibly starting there in a normal only game?

I have So many questions so I will try to break it down.

1) I downloaded the character app for my IPad, I loaded it up but can't tell how I'm supposed to connect to a VTD?
2) I made an elf wizard and set all tokens to none because I don't have any yet. but all my stats are 12? I think I am doing something wrong is there a good walk-through of how to use the app?
3) I see most of the normal only times this weekend have 10 slots open, and one with 5, If I buy one ticket in a 10 slot time slot will I be alone and hopelessly overwhelmed? should I buy into the 5 slot and hope the people in there don't mind?
4) Do I need a camera and Microphone to play? (I have them just checking)
5) I'm very excited about the idea of TD I've read a ton of the PHB and am engrossing myself in the systems. I just want to make sure I have the technical pieces to make VTD work, is all I need the App?
6) Is it a terrible idea to start with VTD? should I instead wait and try to figure out if I can and want to spend the large money to attend GenCon and all the assosiated costs and difficulties (GenCon Tickets, Room, Flights, etc)

I really appreciate any guidance, I'm still sorting through alot of these threads looking for links to youtube guides or details on this sort of thing. I hope this post isnt too redundant.

Welcome!

I unfortunately don't have a good way to generate a doc for the iOS app, so I won't be much help there, but if you wanted to use tdcharactercreator.com, you could use the following as a quick reference: drive.google.com/drive/u/0/folders/1bqgATO51YwMCcfL9HF4CBn0sF5Z3ZvwI

2. You can simulate an in-person character build by going to: www.truedungeontokens.com/kit and click "Click here to roll your treasure kit". Do that 1 time, and use any tokens in your character app. That will simulate the 10 pack you receive in-person (so use this as a primer!). I THINK all of the tokens are represented that would come from a 10-pack, but you never know...if there is something missing, feel free to post here again and I can help you find a suitable alternative!

3. Avoid being the only ticket in a run (unless you want to try the "Solo Mode". If a run is NORMAL ONLY, it is NORMAL ONLY. So no one should mind if a new player is in the game (and should welcome you with open arms!). People MAY lend you tokens...don't let this overwhelm you or feel pressured into accepting them. Feel free to ask your Coach or DM for more info if you have questions.

4. Camera no, microphone yes (since you'll be communicating with the DM, the Golem, and the NPCs).

5. All you need is the app! During the VTD run, they'll give you a difficulty code and a roller ID (see the Quick Reference i've attached) and you'll enter it into the app to tie you to the game instance. Reading the PHB is a smart move and I did the same when I first started out!

6. Not a terrible idea. Just know it IS quite different from physical True Dungeon (at a Convention). In VTD you will guide your golem and instruct them on what you want to do, you will have an application to roll your saves, roll attacks, etc. In person is VERY hands-on. you will slide a puck for attacks or recall information to cast spells, you will touch puzzles with your own hands, etc.

For Physical True Dungeon, Trent (a well known, dare I say, celebrity in the community) has a video series:
(he also hosts semi-regular TD talks with the folks that run TD and has giveaways at the end (so smash that "like and subscribe" if you feel so inclined).

If you are on Discord, feel free to join the TD unofficial community. they can help with builds, token discussion, general questions, etc.: discord.gg/MAmhSXTT (I'm on there too if you want to reach out with additional questions).

Welcome to True Dungeon! Hope you enjoy it!

Edit: There's also a virtual true dungeon primer video that was updated in 2022:
(watch that for sure!)

Hi and welcome.

There are 2 parts to doing VTD. One is the app or website for your character. The other will be a Zoom session. You do not have to use a camera, but as Alex noted, you do need a microphone. You can purchase tickets and will connect via Zoom through td.events.

In the case of the app, it is a free download for IOS and Android (although for Android you will need to download from Trent's site. The links are below in my signature.

For the app, you can add a new character. In that view, select the character type and select 'Generate xxxx' for that character type. You will be set up with basic equipment. You may use that basic set for a VTD adventure. If you have tokens of your own, feel free to replace any of the basic set items.

Select Calc to show your basic stats. There is an option on that view for 'VirtualTD' That will bring you to the Virtual TD view. It will automatically ask for a difficulty code. You will get that when your adventure starts, and will set the stats for any creatures you may encounter. After that it will ask for a Slot ID. This connects you to the DM, so all your rolls and results are sent to the DM. All the math is automated. If you just want to look things over and try out some items, you can enter 'dungeon' for the Difficulty Code, and you will be set up in practice mode. That is available any time, but use the code from the coach during your run.

The web site operates very similar, and either the web site or the apps are supported.

Relax. You will have time at the beginning of the adventure if you still have quests, and the coaches at the start are very helpful. The most important rule is to have fun!

Welcome to True Dungeon and the community!

I will let all of the people that are much smarter than myself answer your questions about how to get started. If you want to DM me on this forum with your contact information and an address I'd be happy to send out a starter pack of Tokens to you. They probably won't make it to you in time to use them for this month's VTD but it would give you something to get going at GenCon or any other future event.

I also have an extra ticket for Saturday at 1:24PM CDT and you could snag Elf Wizard if you'd like (I own the majority of the tickets), but I'm not sure what difficulty we'll be on (I'd imagine Hardcore probably).

In addition to the good info provided here by others, there's also a FAQ that may be useful: td.events/faq

Thank you all for the information its super helpful!

I will try out that Dungeon code to test it out, I think that would be helpful and I will try the website as well!

@Alex I Appreciate the invitation, I love the idea of joining people who are not blindsided by a new person being there, I Hope I wouldn't be a dead weight. I see that time slot is sold out, How would I go about joining you and getting a ticket?

I'm hoping its a start to a great new hobby!

Morphas,
I am in the Sunday 1pm CST Normal run, and you are certainly welcome to join.
I picked Elf since there wasn't a magic-user signed up yet, but you can have it if you want.
You could even borrow my Elf Wizard build. I have several builds specially created for normal using only common and uncommon tokens.

Raptorov great to know I wouldnt be invading! I don't honestly know what class to play since I don't have any tokens I have no idea what would be good for me! I simply picked wizard because Im more of a puzzle person then a meathead! but I feel like all the classes have a "cool" factor.

I want to make sure I have everything in place before I buy a ticket but you may well see me in that Sunday game!
