TOPIC: What is a True Grind?

What is a True Grind? 1 month 2 weeks ago #1

Hello, I'm new to True Dungeon as of GenCon this year and I'm excited to do more. I see that there's an event categorized as a "True Grind" coming up at Gamehole Con. I've seen a few passing mentions of what a True Grind is, but nothing definitive. I've checked the PHB, the resources page, the first few pages of the forums, and the FAQ to no avail. It looks like the event listing is only for one hour, so is this a shorter-style event?

Would some kind soul be able to explain the difference between something like a regular convention adventure or a VTD and a True Grind?

Convention adventure: Organized, gentle, methodical
VTD: Same as above but virtual

True Grind: in-person onslaught of enemies. Tight deadlines with completion, massive amounts of damage. Typically bought and ran by experienced players with tokens to cover the "oddities" that could occur (weapons overheating so you can't use them, players turn on the party, etc.)

Would recommend trying it once if you can snag a ticket, but getting a ticket can be even more painful than a True Grind run.

The Upcoming Events/Gamehole Con page has a description of the next True Grind.

A pro tip people give is that Grind difficulty is often one step harder than a regular run. So if you normally play Hardcore, you might want to step back to Normal for Grind, etc.

Since no one has said it up front:

Grind is 100% COMBAT - there are no "puzzle rooms"
In fact, there's just one room.

Imagine walking into a True Dungeon room and there's 3 combat tables set up, and each one has a stack of combat boards on it, an inch high. Kill one monster, and another one shows up.
There's Coaching, but no training room - You are expected to know how to slide, and it's basically a non-stop Combat room for a full hour of kill-kill-kill.

That said, there's often *some* thinking involved - Picc (who comes up with most of the Grind adventures these days) often themes them around pop culture (Warcraft, Lord of the Rings, Anime series, etc) and has a storyline woven into all the combat. If you're smart, or familiar with the story, you might be able to figure out some ways to work around certain combat challenges (bribe the Guard with gold, throw the blink dog a Turkey Leg, distract the Henchman with riddles, etc) If you want to get to the final combat, your biggest enemy is time - not the monster itself.

Picc puts on an amazing event and - as other have mentioned - there's a lot of competition for these runs.
