TOPIC: Best way to prepare one character for both in-person TD and VTD without rebuildi

Best way to prepare one character for both in-person TD and VTD without rebuildi 11 hours 6 minutes ago #1

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to plan ahead for future True Dungeon runs and wanted to ask something practical.

For players who do both in-person TD and VTD, how do you build one character that works well in both formats without having to constantly rebuild or swap too many tokens each time?

I’m especially curious about:

which classes transition most smoothly between in-person and VTD
what stats or token slots you prioritize first if you want one flexible build
whether you keep one “core” build and only swap a few situational pieces depending on the event

I’d love to hear how experienced players handle this, especially if you try to stay efficient on budget and still be useful in pickup groups.

Thanks in advance!

For me, I run Cleric. For PUG's, if Cleric is taken I can easily assemble a Wizard out of my Cleric tokens and just carry a few backup tokens to swap out.

For my group of 4 that run at GenCon every year, I built 4 basic builds of exactly 30 tokens for each build. They are broken out as melee, range, caster, and specialist. They are very basic and super flexible. For example, melee basic build can be used for just about any class, but ideally only used for Barbarian, Fighters, and Paladin. I do carry a few additional tokens to add to the basic build depending on which class is used. So if Barbarian is selected I have an armor that can be swapped in. I also have an axe that can be swapped in.

There's probably lots of different options. But I do think minor tinkering of builds can make it useful for a lot of diffferent classes.
Cleric since '09.

I save different builds in the character creator app. It’s pretty easy to clone a character (say, from fighter to barbarian) and then just swap out the tokens that change. If you have multiple builds that wear the same boots, for example, you can just leave that token in the slot.

For in-person play, the most important thing is to have the various physical weapon tokens available to put in the appropriate puck. If you have your VTD characters already in the app (or website), it usually is pretty quick to pull up the relevant build, look it over, make any last-minute adjustments, and show it to the coach.
