For those of you who bookmark straight to the forum. There are True Dungeon Guides posted today on the home page.

After Indy, there was quite a bit of feedback that the event received. And one of the things listed was that there was interested in a player guide for the event.
As said on the home page headline:
“With the help of several TD volunteers, we have fashioned a Guide to help interested and beginning TD players get an idea of what True Dungeon is all about. Plans call for this document to be upgraded and improved as time goes by, and we may professionally publish some kind of Player’s Handbook next year for Indy. Enjoy."

Here is a Beginner's Guide , and a Spell Guide .

My wife and I are bringing some of our friends this year, and I thumbed through the beginners guide before emailing it to them.

I was disheartened to see that the character classes had been associated to genders. The Cleric is the only female role, and I had to explain to them not to take it literally. Still, I think my male friend will shy away from the Cleric, and his girlfriend may feel limited to just that (even though I know she'll be more comfortable with the Fighter).

I know this is the first version, and it is really great - don't get me wrong. I'm just hoping that we could have a female version of each character class represented in the guide for beginners so that we don't exclude the ladies.

My wife rocked as a Paladin last year. And I think we all "know" that these characters are not exclusive - but remember, this is a "beginners" guide, and the "beginners" may be new to gaming, not just to True Dungeon.

Thanks for listening.

Greetings Matthew, and thank you for voicing your thoughts.

The information listed in the character classes based solely on what is and has been on the character cards we hand out.
You will also notice some have dates of birth. These birthdates do not limit players to those dates, any more than names or gender. These simply details, which may aide you in your quest. Back in 03', one of the questions related to such information.

The Guide presents the information I was given from the player cards, and the abilities I was informed they have. In no way is this meant to exclude any players from chosing the class they desire. Rather, familiarize them with the details of chosen character so they can best answer any such questions should they be presented in the dungeon challenges ahead.

Indeed, this is only the first version, and with the feedback from those who read it, and the changes to the event will shape and hopefully improve the guide.
My humble apologies if it felt as though it was geared to perhaps one gender or another. I myself am female, and wrote the guide from the way that I spiel to all of my adventure parties.
If you feel though that by giving the character details from the character cards our players will be using is going to be a negative factor in the information presented, I'm sure that those details can be omitted to be more inviting to any reader.
Please keep the feedback coming, this is how we know where to improve and grow.

-your humble pixie servant.

Good point, Matthew. Perhaps we can get our artist to draw the character class in both genders - that way literally new gamers will see there is a choice.

Thank you for not taking my feedback negatively, as it certainly wasn't meant to be.

I never noticed that the character cards had names on them....

I guess I really do need that Scroll of Detect Secret Doors -- I'm obviously not very observant....

Thank you for all of the energy and effort that you put into creating it.

As has been mentioned, the character cards are informational and not intended to limit any player to the genders. In fact most people do not notice that Sulla the Cleric was represented as a Female. Just as Speedwell and Grog are the two non humans, being a Halfling and Half-orc respectively.

People are free to play the characters any way they want, however, as was done the first year, there may be questions or special situations where a female or Halfling would only prevail. These are not intended as racial or gender bias, merely to add another element that aids an observant thinking party and hinders the group that is not as careful with details. Only one time that I know of (purely as a joke) did the DM make male players speak in a higher voice and walk on their knees as a result of a spell that changed the character classes on the party.

I have had groups of all women go through and they were not at all bothered by the fact that most of the character classes were men. While I understand everyone has a different level of sensitivity regarding gender and racial bias, I would hope your friends, and indeed all gamers, are willing to overlook the predetermined genders in for the game and just have fun.

I will talk to our artist about varying genders in the drawings, but that may be lower on the priority list as I have already requested several other renderings for other documentation.

Although I do see your point regarding those new to gaming who might not be as acceptable about giving up their own “personality. Maybe a introduction added to the character section that states the character personal information is intended to enhance game play and in no way is intended to limit participation by a player due to differences in gender, etc.

Thank you for the feedback and keep it coming, this is the only way we can make the event as enjoyable for as many as we can.
