TOPIC: Help test possible new forum software

Help test possible new forum software 18 years 2 months ago #1

All,

Heidi has pointed out wowbb as a possible replacement for the current interim punBB. I've setup a test forum at:

truedungeon.mywowbb.com/

Please check it out -- register, post a comment, etc and let me know what you think of it. It has all the features we want except for easy export of the current user and post database. Before I dig in to see the effort required I'd like to get feedback first.

Thanks.

I posted some more info there, and really encourage everyone to go check it out.

And I want to thank Doug for setting up the test forum, so we can really try it out before making a commitment.

Edit: I've also added a poll on the test forum for everyone to vote about whether or not they think we should go with it.

Just a note www.simplemachines.org/ is free and I know a bunch of people who use it.

Well, why are you just now suggesting it then?!? The reason I suggested the other one was because it was the only one I found searching thru google that looked like it had all the functions we needed. The main concern will be if it will import all the old data, but I'm all for checking it out as well.

Actually, I suggested it back when Doug first mentioned looking for new software.

I checked on their site and they say you should be able to import phpBB data.

We actually need it to import punBB since that is the new forum software and we've gained members and messages since the conversion. I think Jeff didn't like the look of SMF when we looked at it last month -- I'll check again.

I know we'd prefer to save what has been done here since the hack, but only 3 people have joined since the first of the year, and only one of them has posted. There also hasn't been near as much "traffic". I'd be more than willing to have to recreate some of this if it gets us to a better version. The sooner the better.

There is supposedly a converter for punBB to SMF according to their forum.

I tried to find it -- it looks like we need to become "charter members" to get access to the converter. No biggee, its only $45 -- we'll do it if people like the software.

That's 1/2 the price for wowbb. And the more I try out SMF, the more I like it. There are some really cool features.
