TOPIC: Confused

Confused 18 years 1 month ago #1

Okay. Is it just me or is anybody else having problems figuring out which posts are new and which aren't?

Ever time I go into a section I can't really figure it out. The icons on the left that show whether a topic has a new post looks pretty much the same as all the rest of the icons. It's really annoying.

It would be nice to have some better icons for it.
Just my opinion.

I'm not sure if this is the same problem but I was having trouble figuring out new posts too but I saw a news item on the top of the screen that said to use the "mark read" button on the bottom of the screen. This cleaned up all the old posts that I had read.

I had a question about the forum myself. I was wondering if a "New Message" box would appear on the screen if you received a new private message like it did in the old forum?

Thanks,
David (S.)

if you look at the blue bar with HOME HELP SEARCH etc on it...next to MY MESSAGES will appear a number reflecting that you have new PM messages.

As for the forum pages with NEW posts...it is tricky to keep an eye out for the NEW indicator. I find that my biggest user problem is I tend to go back to the main forum page after reading only one new post in a topic...then I forget to go back and read any others.

I think the only tip I have to help people navigate the forum is to suggest that people use the "extension string" to navigate...I mean this thing:

True Adventures Official Forum > General > Website Feedback >

Each of these items is a link back to where you just hopped from. I try to remember when there are multiple new posts in a single section to use those links to go back...

David, I'll copy this into a PM so you can see the MY MESSAGES thing get a (1).

David if you go into your profile and go to personal message options, there is a box you can check for a pop up whenever you receive a new message like the old forum. However remember if you have this enabled and a popup blocker enabled that will by default keep the page from being able to open the little notification. Although as gary mentioned you will have a number next to your My Messages indicating how many messages you have.

Next,
I honestly haven't had any trouble with the new system. I check the threads that are marked new to see the new posts.

Also you in your profile for forum look and layout set the preferences for new posts to be at the top. So those are always at the top(but below the stickies that are tacked at the top) and marked new. I haven't had any problem with this setup. It may be that you need to play with your preferences on how things are displayed.

Hope those help some guys.

If you are using the Default or Babylon forum theme, there is a link at the top that says "Show unread post since last visit." It brings up a list of every thread that has had a new post, and all you have to do is click on the "New" icon to go to the first new post since you last read that thread. And it updates immediately, including new posts made while you're here. So if you just click the link again when you finish a thread, you get an updated list of what's new.

Hope that helps.

I like these forums. I just wish the new Gen Con forums were anywhere near as good...

Yes yes, I like our forum I think it is nicer/friendlier here. Plus here I also have a brother to hide behind when people threaten to harm this silly little pixie. Yay for the TD Forum. *smiles*

Okay. cool
The show unread posts will probably help the most.
The silly icons are only to tell you about how many posts are in a thread.
I still like having a visual cue the best. Even if the new ones got highlighted like the icon on the main page does when there's new posts.

Oh, well. I guess I'll just use the unread posts things. That will be the easiest.

Thanks everyone. =)
