TOPIC: Updating the buy tokens page

Re: Updating the buy tokens page 16 years 11 months ago #13
I don't think TD should give any sort of tacit stamp of approval to private traders, even so far as to have a signup sheet or list. I saw too many people offering crappy value deals to feel comfortable with that sort of thing. It's one thing when it's TD run, their goal is generally customer satisfaction and balance. A private trader's goals are a bit different.

I agree with Henwy. I know in 2005 everyone trading in the shops was assuming that the dealer was a part of True Dungeon and was offering fair trade values and not looking to make a profit. If a private collector set up shop in some sort of formal TD sanctioned area (perhaps like a booth similar to the bag check-in area last year), new players looking to trade would very possibly assume they were associated somehow with TD and would assume that they were offering fair trades. It would be too easy for someone to take advantage of a trade in that situation with a new player or token collector (like if the person had an Ultra-Rare and didn't realize it's value and traded it for a few Rares or Uncommons). And if the person later found out that they didn't get a fair trade, they would likely hold it against True Dungeon.

It is probably enough that private collectors can set up shop at one of the tables in the Tavern. That does make it appear more like a private collector than a True Dungeon affiliated trader.

Of course you would make it perfectly clear that the person isn't associated with TD.

"Crappy" deals are going to happen with or without a store front. The solution is know what your tokens are worth, shop around, don't trade with people who are trying to rip you off.

If its clear that the person is not with True Dungeon, I don't see an issue. A disgruntled trader could no more hold TD accountable than if they lost value in a trade with someone in the Tavern.

I think we're in violent agreement. The point is to make it clear that the trader isn't associated with True Dungeon. The best way to do that is to continue the current policy of letting people set up ad-hoc trading areas in the Tavern table area, rather than setting up some kind of official looking storefront within the Tavern that private token sellers would take turns occupying. Someone sitting at a table trading/selling/buying tokens is pretty clearly a private collector, but someone in a formal booth, with set hours, signs, etc., could easily be mistaken for someone affiliated with True Dungeon. That way if someone gets a crappy deal they'll blame the private collector instead of True Dungeon (hopefully).

At Indy '05, there were two shops set up in the "city" area of the Tavern. I loved the feel of this. It was very "D&D" like and I think it was something cool that added to the experience. It also gave a more structured base for people looking to trade. At other events, Token Trading has always been hit or miss, informal, and usually with friends.

I think it would be pretty easy to set something like this up and still make it clear that this person does not work for, is not associated with, is not related to, in no way reflects the opinions of, etc. etc. etc. True Dungeon. If you can add the atmosphere of a shop and create a more stable trading environment with times, while eliminating any chance that a person might be misled into thinking that the trader is an "Official TD Merchant", why not? =|

I agree - the shop space was pretty cool, even if the mage guild was a little bit more to look at than the blacksmith/armory... We did have weapons though!

I think the trading will pick up a bit every year, and now that the tokens are more appealing to the eye, I think we will see more trading in the tavern!

Maybe one afternoon I set up shop after Sis and I get lunch and walk the con!!!
