TOPIC: "VS." Dungeon

"VS." Dungeon 18 years 10 months ago #1

For some future TD, I'd like to see a Versus Dungeon in addition to the traditional dungeon. In this dungeon, two teams would enter opposite ends, each searching for some lost artifact or valuable treasure. The survivors of both parties meet in the middle and have a good ole fashioned throw-down to the death (or any other way they wish to determine who gets the artifact).

There's something I like about the idea of taking on real people. Plus, I bet it would be great for token sales because I could see going through a great many in the final showdown.

This could be treacherous. Could you see a traitor planted in one of the parties? Ahh the frail of heart and the weak in loyalty throwing wrinkles into best laid plans.

Very interesting idea.

This could be pretty amusing...

Talk about a fast way to eliminate a bunch of excess tokens! We'd be burning expendibles at light speed!

Yes, it would be treacherous. The "screw your opponent" factor would be very high. It would make for some lively encounters.

As well as stab your own party for gain, especially if you were a plant before the game began.

Personally, I think this would be cool. But you would have to be careful and advertise this as Vs. Dungeon. The reason is I could see a lot of people NOT wanting to go against SUPER groups with hundreds of dollars in tokens.

But along the same lines, how about a "Dueling Area" in the Tavern where fighters can slide off against eachother in a Duel. Perhaps a "king of the hill" format. Would make for some interesting preparation mechanics.

I could see some people worrying about super groups. Personally, I wouldn't care if I was killed in the last room of the dungeon in a fierce battle (I'd be happy to get to the last room). I can see stories of how an undermanned group triumphed over a superior force. That's what legends are made of.

I also thought about the "arena" idea. It would be a nice attraction in the tavern. I like your idea of a king of the hill scenerio--you stay in as long as you keep winning.

I like the dueling or even an old fashioned Robin Hood archery or sword competency contest with prizes (Super spiffy Tokens not available anywhere else???!!!). For an entry fee, you could compete with daily winners and a grand 4 day champion. It could be similar to the rogue skills Raven proposed. Maybe you could figure bard, MU, and Cleric skills too. Could be a source of revenue and a source for treasured tokens.

To limit uber groups with tons of tokens, what if that year all tokens have a number on the TD logo side of the token? Then you are only allowed to take in a certain point value of tokens in with you...kinda like 300 point armies in miniatures games. Of course, that wouldn't address all tokens from previous runs and would add a level of complexity that may not be desired...

I think the answer might be simpler. I think if advertised or promoted as a tough duel to the death dungeon, more prepared parties will gravitate to it, but perhaps you could enter the dungeon with each member allowed only a set number of tokens. If each individual were allowed only seven tokens (number to be determined by smarter people than I), then the parties would have to decide--is that maxed out figher as valuable as protecting all the assets of the party and having rope, flint and steel, etc. What scrolls are of most value and how many? Or maybe this is tournament and each party is given the exact same tokens as a part of admission cost and no outside tokens are allowed.

Maybe there could be limits like weight in wrestling with an unlimited token class down to a bare bones class.

Lots of ways to design it.

It'd be nice but it'd never work out well. What would be a deal breaker is probaly movement rules. Everyone would be trying to edge around and whack the cleric/wizard :P. How do you judge if someone can get pass or otherwise maneuver in a situation like that. Not to mention where your location is would conflict with where you would have to move to in order to then slide the token whozit.
