dballing,
Don't be put off by the thought it takes a mountain of tokens to succeed. As a relative newbie, I played TD in 2008, 2009 and the True Realm, I don't have a mountain of tokens, or a complete collection of anything. I just recently realized I can trade in my excess commons for trade items. Those can be used for trading too.

It wasn't until I went to True Realm and met many loyal fanatics to TD that I "got" the use of tokens. Mainly, they help you role play if you'd like. We played with a wizard who has all kinds of scrolls and such for his wizard in a cool spell book looking binder. He'd throw out scroll after scroll as needed. It was then I decided to make my barbarian an archer, and traded for masterwork arrows and got a nice bow to go with the bracers I had gotten randomly. Then I could let loose with a flurry of arrows without worrying about collect-ability. Suddenly I was the barbarian master archer.
Secondly, TD re-awakened my love of good ole D&D, and now I am thinking of starting a RPG group again, but maybe use the tokens as the stuff in the market, or the treasure found. Then if I use a rare whatever, the DM still has it, and maybe my character can get it again. Then maybe I can use all the cool sling bullets out there.

Just some ideas. Its only a CCG if you want it to be.
But its a great GAME, no matter what.
