TOPIC: Chip vs Wooden Tokens

Chip vs Wooden Tokens 12 years 8 months ago #1

I thought it was interesting, I try to have as many wooden tokens in my binder as possible, because they weigh less than the chip tokens plus have that "old school" charm.

After this year's token set, the only wooden tokens in the entire group binder other than a few old gear tokens will be the Druid's Dragonscale Shield, and possibly the Gloves of Dexterity for the Rogue. Every other wooden token has been replaced with a more powerful Chip token - and even those two have a chip equivalent.

Is anyone else using many wooden tokens on runs, or is it all chip tokens now?

I used to use as many woodies as possible, but since they are more prone to breakage (especially when taken out of their safe binder pages, and tucked into token totes, binders, or bags) I've been replacing them with Chip version wherever possible.

My group uses both, with no real preference for one over the other.

I can't wait to get rid of my last woodie. Yes, they're easier to lug through an airport, but:
  1. Woodie tokens have a nasty habit flying out of pucks when hitting the backboard or being struck by another puck.
  2. Since I secure them on a Took Band-It , I need my tokens to have a steel core.
  3. As Raven mentioned, I fear for their safety.

I remember one of my very first trades on the forums, back in 2005 I think, the Bracers of Defense I traded for was broken in half in shipping. I think that's the only token I've had broken in shipping though. I'm still using that broken token in the group binder actually, for old times sake, although I suspect it is soon to be replaced with Mithral Bracers.

Ever since my second TD I never have and (I hope... KoW) that I never will enter the dungeon without my woodie "Small Steel Mirror" tucked into my badge holder! That dang thing has saved my butt on a few occasions and I'd feel like a scumbag turncoat if I ever retired it!

Otherwise - yeah I'm with the crowd - Chippies are the way of the future - until Jeff trades everything out for a few bits of computer memory and starts handing out TD Tablets! :silly:

They say that the best weapon is the one you never have to use. I respectfully disagree. I prefer the weapon you only have to use once! Oh - and if you really need to think about whether you're going to use the fireball or the + umpty staff of butt-whooping - you're likely to find yourself full of arrows, or fangs, or nasty knives & swords and such. Don't think - just shoot!

Do you trust these with your URs? I was looking for something like this but I thought the pull would not be sufficient. I guess for $3/ea it's worth trying out.

The magnets are quite strong. I've been using mine for the last three years and have never had a token come off accidentally.

I'll second the vote of confidence in these guys. It takes a good effort to pry the token away from the magnet.

I've outfitted my entire group with two of these per player. They are designed for use on the bicep, but you can tighten them for use on the forearm (similar to bracers). We are working on plans to create laminated player reference card with Velcro on the back, so they can secure onto the Tool Band-It straps (similar to QB armband playbooks).

I still use one or two wooden tokens in the dungeon. Like everyone else, the chips are much more durable (and easier to replace if lost!).

But at heart, I'm still in the wooden old school camp. They're MUCH lighter, easy to read. And in a way that's hard to describe, more magical.

Maybe druids should only be able to use wooden tokens?

I'm like you, the old wooden tokens hold a place in my heart that the new chip tokens can never match. They are kind of like the Alpha edition of Magic The Gathering. Almost none of the old wooden tokens are still good enough to play, except for the old gear tokens, but I'm still trying to complete all my wooden token sets.
