TOPIC: Ranged Weapons Idea

Ranged Weapons Idea 18 years 3 weeks ago #1

This is way too late for this year, but I just came up with an idea that might make ranged weapons more practical.

What if you had a two-sided token for ranged weapons? You'd still have to throw the token, but you'd no longer have a 50% of missing due to the token landing logo side up. One side would be the "critical hit" side (one of the numbers around the outside would give you damage + 1) and the other be "critical fail" (with 0 as one of the numbers).

To me, this seems like a much more fair way to handle ranged weapons in game. Of course, I'm sure this will make them a tad more expensive to make (since I'm pretty sure you just do one print run of "backs" and then run off the individual front designs), but I think they would actually get used this way.

Comments?

There has been extensive talk and work on Ranged attacks...I think you will like the results...

You suggestion is very good. I think the guide is coming out pretty soon with revised ranged rules...let's see what happens when that is published and see if your double sided suggestion is still a potential fix.

Keep those ideas coming - maybe look into uses for gold, if you have some spare time...

Without revised rules, range is pretty much crud as it is. Frankly, I still like the idea of a velcro dartboard of sorts that's hung over the slider board and if you're chucking range we have you chuck the token wrapped in something at the board. Surely there could be some way to make a token cozy that would allow it to stick to velcrow but still reveal the numbers.

Maybe it's just me but I like the idea of having to chuck something if it's a ranged weapon.

The target circles for True Heroes were pretty cool and the *CLUNK* they made as the ball bearing connected was really satisfying.

My thought at preserving the "chucking tokens onto the 'hit' board" mechanic was to make things easier for the DMs (since they'd have to worry about two different types of fighting) and to prevent having to create an entirely new system (like the velcro board, interesting as it is).

Also, having to chuck the token onto the board also means that you may cancel out another attack like you can with melee combat due to bumping sliders.
