Those effects come from the 3.5 rules which, I believe, of all the rule sets, we are following the closest.

Ya, but we're obviously not following 3rd edition blink. It wouldn't make any sense for blink as described to teleport you into solid matter. For one thing, you'd die. It can't be a mix and match in this case. Either blink sends you into the ethereal, in which case ya, you can move through solid whozits and see invis creatures better, or it moves you around bodily and jumps you about wherein the whole moving through solid objects dosen't make much sense, nor does the invisibility seeing.

Henwy, I understand what you are saying about the description but if we are trying to stick with 3.5 rules, I think the description needs to be updated. The only reason I can think for not going with the 3.5 rules is that it is too powerful? The 3.5 rules have the functions listed above: 50% miss and walk through solid objects and you don't die if you blink into solid matter. From the text "You are shunted off to the nearest opens space and take 1d6 of damage for each 5 feet so traveled."

Perhaps Dave/Jeff can comment on why the older version of Blink was used?

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't TD a variant? Therefore it is does not have to exactly match the current rules set out in 3.5.
Especially given the nature of the event and application of it they can choose or vary from the given rules for what works best/easiest within the construct of the event?

You don't die if you ethereally phase into solid matter. you take damage as you indicated. If you teleport into solid matter a la blink from 2nd edition (if moving into solid objects were possible), you die.

DD, certainly when there is a good reason (and there may be in this case) TD has strayed from the 3.5 Rules. But the 3.5 rules are the default.

I was just pointing out that the function/description are not based on 3.5 and its not clear if this was done intentionally or accidentally.
If I remember correctly, TD originally most closely resembled first edition AD&D. Some items have been updated to be more in line with later versions. But the final authority is Jeff, and some items may have little/no correlation with their D&D counterparts.

Sweet! Thanks for the new guides :-)

Typo watch:

Potion of Invisibility: There is a usage of the homonym "realize" in place of what should be "relies."

Wonderous Cloak of Displacement: States "this item only works once" instead of "this item only works once per encounter/room" as I beleive it is supposed to.

Rumor - Medium: States "A rumor obtained with a Minor Rumor token has a 60% chance of being correct." Should say "Medium Rumor token..."

On page 3 it says Druids can use a short sword, but on page 8 they are not listed.

Well, it says one-time use per combat, so I think that is clear...

Since I traded a +1 Plate Mail, Necklace of Fireballs, Scroll of Knock, and +1 Cloak for this item, and it was subsequently nerfed, I would be interested in trading it (and probably some reds) for a +2 long sword or +1 Plate if anyone is interested... So much for my great trade at the time.
Hence my description of moving through matter from the 3.5 rules.

Which obviously dosen't apply because it has notta to do with how the spell is described. There has to be some sort of consistancy. If blink is a teleportation effect...how in the world do you move through solid matter?

I imagine blink was taken to its oldschool roots because the 3.5 version has almost zilch to do with the one that gamers recall from 'the old days'. It's kinda like finding out that the fireball in 3.5 is only used to light candles or something. Some spells acquire a life all their own based on nostalgia and blink is one of them. If you accept that blink is basically teleporting around (blinking) then you can't exactly apply the other effects in 3.5 because it makes no sense then.

Henwy, I don't think you understand what I am saying.

Granted, the description in the Token Guide for Blink is for some pre-3.5 version of the spell.
The 3.5 version of Blink however, ALLOWS walking though solid objects, 50% chance of miss, +2 to-hit, etc.
True Dungeon typically follows 3.5 rules or at least starts there and makes changes as necessary.
Therefore, perhaps the description in the Token Guide is outdated.
